The Austrian wood-based materials manufacturer Egger is investing 70 million euros in its main plant in St. Johann. Among other things, a new high-bay warehouse, a recycling tower and a second biomass boiler are planned.
The first major project to be implemented as part of the investment plans is the new high-bay warehouse, explains Matthias Danzl, Head of Sales & Marketing at Egger. "On an area of around 3,800 square meters, wood-based materials are automatically stored in a total of 4,480 full-format storage spaces on 33 levels one above the other," says Danzl.
An important contribution to the protection of the environment and the conservation of natural resources is made through the use of waste wood recycling material. The waste wood is to be cleaned and processed in a new recycling tower. The goal is to obtain up to 50 percent of the wood required from recycling material in the future, explains Danzl.
In a second biomass boiler, even more heat energy is to be obtained from biomass and biogenic production residues in the future. “Egger will also feed the waste heat into the district heating network of the communities of St. Johann and Oberndorf. 1,500 households and public buildings are supplied with district heating, ”explains Albert Berktold, Plant Manager Technology and Production at Egger. In addition, electricity from biomass will be generated for the first time using combined heat and power, which will cover around 50 percent of the plant's electricity consumption.
