Softwood lumber prices support French sawmills as hardwood demand stays weak

France entered the second half of 2026 with an increasingly divided sawmill market. GWMI’s reading of the latest French sales, price and construction data points to a clear improvement on the softwood side, where domestic business has strengthened and several construction lumber products have moved higher, while hardwood mills continue to face weak demand across traditional end markets. The recovery is therefore uneven rather than industry-wide, with high sawlog costs, relatively short order books and only a limited improvement in construction still keeping pressure on margins and production decisions.
