German forest logging collapses – a return to the situation 10 years ago

Logging in Germany has dropped sharply, with 2024 volumes at 61.2 million cubic meters—nearly 10 million less than the previous year, according to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Between 2014 and 2024, almost 340 million cubic meters of mainly spruce were harvested due to book printing beetle damage. As the infestation subsides, fellings have rapidly declined. The drop is largely due to reduced insect damage. “Last year was rainy, and there were no widespread printer disasters,” said Olli Oksanen, CEO of Finnharvest Germany.
