U.S. industry says Canada’s lumber support fuels subsidy dispute

The U.S. lumber sector has sharply criticized Canada’s recently announced C$1.2 billion ($870 million) support package for its softwood lumber industry, warning it will escalate the decades-long trade dispute and could trigger higher import duties on Canadian wood products. Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the financial aid program, which includes loan guarantees, grants, and market development funds aimed at helping Canadian mills cope with existing U.S. tariffs.
