Latest U.S. move pushes duties on Canadian softwood lumber over 35%

The United States has more than doubled countervailing duties on Canadian softwood lumber imports, intensifying a decades-long trade dispute and prompting swift retaliation from Ottawa. The U.S. Department of Commerce confirmed the countervailing duty rate will rise to 14.63% from 6.74%, effective immediately. Combined with the 20.56% anti-dumping duties announced weeks earlier, most Canadian softwood lumber now faces a 35.19% combined rate at the border. Some companies will see steeper rates.
