Canadian sawmill halts activity due to increased U.S. duties and regulatory uncertainty

Scierie St-Michel, a major sawmill operation in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, has announced the temporary suspension of its activities due to rising financial pressure linked to increased U.S. softwood lumber tariffs and ongoing regulatory uncertainty surrounding forest access. The shutdown affects the company’s sawing plant and forestry operations starting August 4, with logging operations to follow from August 18. Over 250 jobs are directly impacted.
