U.S. duties force large Canadian lumber producer to halt operations, lay off staff
Canadian lumber producer Groupe Rémabec will temporarily lay off more than 1,000 workers in Quebec, citing surging U.S. duties and weakening market conditions that have made operations unsustainable. The layoffs will affect Arbec Forest Products, Rémabec’s manufacturing division, which will shut down indefinitely. The number of job losses could rise to 1,400 in the coming weeks, the company said in a statement released Wednesday.
