Increased log exports exports to China causes low hardwood supply in Germany
German sawmills are currently lacking hardwood. The reason is the increasing export of logs to China. In 2017, according to Eurostat, the exports of logs to China amounted to around 456,000 m3, with an upward trend. In January and February 2018, exports of beech logs to China increased by a further 20% to 95,000 cubic meters compared to the same period of the previous year.
