Why an Austrian sawmill dynasty is buying into Scandinavia

There is a certain irony in the fact that HS Timber Group's newest acquisition sits barely a few hundred kilometres from the Arctic Circle. The deal, completed on 1 July, gives the Austrian group full ownership of Malå Såg AB — a Swedish sawmill founded in 1946 — which will now be rebranded Malå Timber. It is a modest-sounding transaction dressed up in the language of "a new chapter." But look closer at why the mill changed hands at all, and it says as much about the pressures facing Europe's timber trade as it does about either company's ambitions.
