European wood industry faces growing production cuts in 2026

Europe’s wood-processing industry has entered a much broader phase of capacity adjustment in 2026 than headline plant closures alone suggest. Permanent sawmill closures in Sweden, Finland, France and Germany are being accompanied by indefinite shutdowns, reductions in shifts, temporary layoffs, insolvency-driven restructuring and sharply lower utilisation at several large industrial sites. A Global Wood Markets Info (GWMI) review of company announcements, insolvency information and local-language industry reporting shows that Sweden and Finland remain at the centre of the adjustment, but production cuts are spreading across Germany, Austria, Poland, Lithuania, France, Bulgaria and Northern Ireland.
