A new sawmill in Mississippi would normally attract limited attention outside the US South. The Lumber Manufactory’s plant in New Albany has annual capacity of 45 million board feet, equivalent to approximately 106,000 m³, placing it well below the largest North American or Nordic operations. Its announced investment of more than €12.9 million is also modest by the standards of a modern greenfield sawmill.
What makes New Albany different is not its size. It is the attempt to apply the logic of a technology startup to one of the most capital-intensive, cyclical and geographically constrained parts of the forest industry.
The Lumber Manufactory, or TLM, was established in 2023 and plans to develop more than a dozen sawmills across the United States before 2030. Instead of treating every plant as a separate engineering project, the company wants to create a standardised mill that can be deployed repeatedly in regions where timber growth exceeds local processing capacity.
