Netherlands’ largest wood pellet power plant project canceled
Vattenfall, the Netherlands’ third-largest energy producer, has announced the cancellation of its planned 120-megawatt wood pellet-burning power plant near Amsterdam. The project, originally approved in 2018, was set to receive €395 million in subsidies and would have powered up to 24,000 homes. The Netherlands remains the European Union’s largest importer of wood pellets for industrial energy production. In 2023, the country imported 2.3 million metric tons of pellets, with nearly half coming from the United States. Denmark and Italy followed as the second- and third-largest importers.
