German softwood lumber exports declined sharply between January and July 2026, as a steep reduction in shipments to the United States outweighed stronger sales to several European and overseas markets.<\/p>\n

Germany exported 3.36 million m\u00b3 of softwood lumber between January and July 2026, this was 16.1% below the 4.01 million m\u00b3 shipped during the corresponding period of 2025.<\/p>\n

Export revenue decreased at a slower rate, falling by 13.5% from \u20ac1.11 billion to \u20ac959.5 million. The average declared export value consequently increased by 3.1%, from \u20ac276.7\/m\u00b3 to \u20ac285.2\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

The difference between the decline in volume and value was partly linked to the changing geographical distribution of German exports. Shipments to the United States, which carried a lower average declared value than several European destinations, almost halved. Germany simultaneously increased deliveries to Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia and Morocco.<\/p>\n

US contraction accounts for most of the decline<\/strong><\/p>\n

The largest change occurred in trade with the United States. German shipments to the US fell from 1.06 million m\u00b3 between January and July 2025 to 554,914 m\u00b3 between January and July 2026, a reduction of 47.8%.<\/p>\n

The contraction represented a loss of approximately 509,000 m\u00b3. Germany\u2019s total exports fell by around 644,000 m\u00b3 during the period, meaning that the US market accounted for nearly four-fifths of the net reduction.<\/p>\n

Export revenue from the United States decreased from \u20ac313.5 million to \u20ac140.7 million. The average declared value of German shipments to the US stood at approximately \u20ac253.5\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Canada also purchased less German lumber. Shipments fell by 26.9% to 97,567 m\u00b3, while exports to the United Kingdom decreased by 17.0% to 170,802 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

The downturn was not limited to North America. Exports to Japan fell by 44.0%, shipments to China declined by 46.4%, and Taiwan purchased 37.5% less German softwood lumber. India remained a considerably larger market than these three Asian destinations but recorded a 25.8% reduction to 83,042 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Italy moves closer to Germany\u2019s largest European markets<\/strong><\/p>\n

Austria became Germany\u2019s second-largest destination by volume, with shipments rising by 9.6% to 385,802 m\u00b3. Export value increased to \u20ac117.4 million.<\/p>\n

Italy recorded one of the strongest increases among Germany\u2019s principal markets. Exports rose by 21.3% to 329,077 m\u00b3, compared with 271,268 m\u00b3 between January and July 2025. Italy consequently approached the Netherlands and France in the ranking of Germany\u2019s leading European destinations.<\/p>\n

Exports to the Czech Republic increased by 52.2% to 93,135 m\u00b3. Poland remained stable at approximately 125,000 m\u00b3, while shipments to the Netherlands declined by 4.0%.<\/p>\n

France remained an important higher-value market. Export volume decreased by 8.8% to 314,730 m\u00b3, but revenue increased from \u20ac101.5 million to \u20ac105.1 million. This lifted the average declared value to approximately \u20ac334\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Switzerland registered a 25.3% increase in volume to 53,897 m\u00b3. The market generated \u20ac22.6 million in export revenue, equivalent to an average declared value of approximately \u20ac419\/m\u00b3, the highest figure among Germany\u2019s 20 leading destinations.<\/p>\n

Morocco records the fastest growth<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several smaller markets partially offset the losses recorded elsewhere. Exports to Saudi Arabia increased by 34.0% to 53,427 m\u00b3, while shipments to Pakistan rose by 9.0% to 64,113 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Morocco recorded the fastest growth among the 20 largest destinations. German exports climbed from 17,429 m\u00b3 to 52,624 m\u00b3, an increase of 201.9%. Morocco consequently moved ahead of Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines and China in the January\u2013July ranking.<\/p>\n

The Philippines also developed positively, with shipments increasing by 15.0% to 35,676 m\u00b3. These gains were not large enough to compensate for the reduction in US trade, but they indicate a greater contribution from several medium-sized markets.<\/p>\n

The January\u2013July figures show that Germany entered the second half of the year with a more geographically distributed export base than one year earlier. The United States remained the largest individual destination, but its share of German softwood lumber exports fell from 26.5% to 16.5%.<\/p>\n

Austria, the Netherlands, Italy and France together received nearly 1.37 million m\u00b3, equivalent to about 41% of Germany\u2019s exports during the seven-month period.
