The Finnish group is now placing greater emphasis on builders’ merchants, construction companies and engineered wood users.

Metsä Wood has outlined a renewed growth plan for the UK, several months after changes in its customer portfolio forced the company to scale back parts of its British operation.

The strategy centres on widening the customer base served by its manufacturing sites in Boston and King’s Lynn. Rather than depending heavily on a limited number of high-volume retail accounts, the company intends to develop business with merchants, trade distributors, construction customers and industrial users.

Although Metsä Wood did not identify the customers involved in its latest statement, the reference to “recent customer portfolio changes” follows the restructuring announced in February 2026. At the time, the company said that changes in the competitive environment and customer requirements would lead to reduced activity in the UK, with around 140 positions potentially affected. British industry reports linked the decision to the end of a long-running supply contract with home-improvement retailer B&Q.

The latest announcement therefore marks more than a routine sales initiative. It indicates an effort to rebuild volumes through a more diversified mix of customers and products following the loss of a major account.

Metsä Wood has already invested in a new enterprise resource planning system and in an automated production line for door linings and casings. The machinery is intended to raise output efficiency, improve dimensional consistency and allow the company to offer a wider selection of machined timber products.

The investment also gives the British operation greater scope to serve customers seeking finished or semi-finished components rather than standard timber alone. This could become increasingly important as merchants and construction companies try to reduce processing, labour and inventory requirements within their own operations.

“The UK remains a key market for Metsä Wood,” said James Davenport, managing director of Metsä Wood UK. He added that the company would concentrate on lasting relationships with merchant, trade and construction customers while continuing to supply timber and engineered wood products.

The Boston and King’s Lynn operations process and upgrade Nordic softwood supplied through Metsä Group’s production and logistics network. Alongside machined timber, the company markets engineered products including Kerto LVL, its laminated veneer lumber used in beams, roof structures, floor elements and off-site construction systems.

Metsä Wood said it had recorded growth in selected parts of the UK business and sees further opportunities in both machined timber and engineered wood. No production targets, investment values or sales forecasts were disclosed.

The attempt to expand engineered wood sales comes at a difficult point in the British construction cycle. Weak new housing activity and cautious purchasing have limited demand for standard construction timber, while higher financing and labour costs continue to delay projects. At the same time, off-site manufacturing and timber-based structural systems offer a separate route to growth, particularly where customers are looking to shorten installation times and reduce material weight.

For Metsä Wood, the immediate task will be to replace concentrated retail volumes with a greater number of merchant, industrial and project-based accounts. Such a shift can reduce dependence on individual contracts, but it also requires a wider sales network, more product variation and closer management of smaller orders.

The new processing line supports that transition by allowing the UK business to compete on machining, availability and service rather than on commodity timber prices alone. Whether the strategy can restore the volumes lost during the customer portfolio changes will depend on the pace of the British construction recovery and Metsä Wood’s ability to secure recurring business across several market channels.

Metsä Wood is seeking new customers for its British manufacturing operations after a difficult restructuring year in which the company announced plans to reduce its UK workforce by around 140 positions.
