Raute has secured contracts worth approximately \u20ac31 million from Kohila Vineer for the technological core of Latvijas Finieris\u2019 \u20ac70 million-plus expansion in Estonia. The project will almost double the plant\u2019s birch plywood capacity, from approximately 45,000 m\u00b3 to 85,000 m\u00b3 per year.<\/p>\n

The contracts, signed during the third quarter, became effective in their full scope on September 14 following the conclusion of the final delivery agreement. The Raute package represents approximately 44% of the total investment planned at Kohila and confirms that the project is centred on a major technological renewal rather than a conventional extension of production space.<\/p>\n

The latest announcement follows Latvijas Finieris\u2019 decision in August to invest more than \u20ac70 million in the Estonian plant. More than \u20ac20 million is expected to be invested during 2026. Once completed, Kohila Vineer should process approximately 160,000 m\u00b3 of birch raw material annually.<\/p>\n

Raute will supply equipment covering most of the production sequence between green veneer and finished plywood. The package includes veneer drying and grading, scarf jointing, patching-line modernisation, plywood lay-up, pre-pressing, hot pressing, panel repair and overlaying.<\/p>\n

The company will combine machinery from its established R5 range with systems from the newer, more automated R7 series. Raute will also provide installation supervision, commissioning and ramp-up assistance, while Kohila Vineer will carry out the installation.<\/p>\n

Deliveries are scheduled for the second half of 2027 and the first quarter of 2028. Individual lines will enter operation gradually from autumn 2027, reducing the operational risks associated with starting several interconnected processes simultaneously.<\/p>\n

The scope shows that Kohila is not merely adding another plywood press. Latvijas Finieris is modernising the entire production flow, including the stages that determine veneer recovery, panel quality, labour requirements and the share of higher-value finished products.<\/p>\n

Improved drying and grading will allow the plant to allocate veneer more accurately between faces, inner layers and lower-grade uses. Scarf jointing and modernised patching can recover sheets that might otherwise be downgraded, while additional repair and overlaying capacity will support more specialised plywood products.<\/p>\n

Kohila\u2019s role within Latvijas Finieris grows<\/strong><\/p>\n

The expansion will lift annual capacity by approximately 40,000 m\u00b3, or almost 90%. At 85,000 m\u00b3 per year, Kohila will become a more important production site within the Latvijas Finieris network, which includes plywood and veneer facilities in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland.<\/p>\n

The group sells its birch plywood internationally under the Riga Wood brand, serving customers in transport, construction, flooring, furniture and other industrial sectors. These markets require increasingly specialised panel structures, coatings and surface properties rather than standard unprocessed plywood.<\/p>\n

The emphasis on automated grading, repair and overlaying indicates that the commercial objective extends beyond producing additional volume. Better recovery from each birch log and a higher share of processed panels will be central to the return on the investment.<\/p>\n

The project will also substantially increase Kohila\u2019s raw-material requirements. An expected annual intake of approximately 160,000 m\u00b3 will require secure birch procurement in Estonia and the surrounding Baltic region. Rising transport costs make efficient veneer recovery and proximity to suitable forest resources increasingly important.<\/p>\n

A long-term investment in European birch plywood<\/strong><\/p>\n

Latvijas Finieris is proceeding with the expansion despite weak European construction and cautious plywood purchasing. The project will not reach its intended scale until 2028, making it a long-term investment in the position of Baltic birch plywood rather than a response to present demand.<\/p>\n

European plywood trade has changed following restrictions on Russian birch products and tighter customer scrutiny of supply-chain origin. This has created additional opportunities for established European manufacturers capable of providing documented raw material, consistent quality and specialised products.<\/p>\n

Lower-cost imported panels remain strong competitors in standard applications, however. The commercial success of the Kohila expansion will depend on industrial and value-added markets where birch plywood\u2019s strength, stability and surface quality command higher prices.<\/p>\n

For Raute, the \u20ac31 million contract is a significant integrated order rather than a sale of individual machinery. For Latvijas Finieris, it turns the investment announced in August into a defined production system covering the path from veneer drying to finished, overlaid plywood.<\/p>\n

The first equipment will arrive during the second half of 2027, with production starting progressively from autumn.
