Headlam Group has closed 28 trade outlets and made 154 employees redundant after formally entering administration.<\/p>\n
Interpath was appointed administrator to the UK\u2019s largest floorcoverings distributor on Tuesday, completing the process announced at the beginning of September when Headlam said it had exhausted the liquidity available under its financing arrangements.<\/p>\n
The company will continue trading through all 17 of its distribution centres and 48 remaining trade outlets while a restructuring is carried out. The closures remove almost 37% of Headlam\u2019s previous network of 76 outlets.<\/p>\n
Headlam now employs around 1,300 people, according to the administrators. The outlets serve flooring installers, contractors and smaller businesses, allowing them to buy or collect carpet, vinyl, luxury vinyl tiles, laminate and wood flooring, together with adhesives, underlay and other installation products.<\/p>\n
The closures leave the main distribution network intact but substantially reduce Headlam\u2019s local presence across the UK.<\/p>\n
Restructuring to include a CVA<\/p>\n
The remaining business is expected to undergo a Company Voluntary Arrangement, or CVA, which would allow Headlam to reach an agreement with creditors while continuing to operate.<\/p>\n
Interpath also plans to refinance the group\u2019s debt facilities and introduce further cost reductions. The proposed restructuring is intended to preserve the core distribution business rather than immediately dismantle or sell the entire company.<\/p>\n
Headlam\u2019s ability to continue operating will depend on support from customers, suppliers and lenders. The company holds an important position between flooring manufacturers and Britain\u2019s fragmented network of independent retailers and contractors.<\/p>\n
Manufacturers use Headlam to store products, divide bulk orders and deliver smaller quantities to customers across the country. Replacing that system directly would be expensive, particularly for overseas laminate and engineered wood flooring producers without their own UK distribution infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Funding crisis overtook the turnaround<\/strong><\/p>\n Headlam had spent several months examining refinancing, property sales and other transactions after launching a strategic review in July. The group exhausted the liquidity available under its existing financing facility before it could complete a wider solution.<\/p>\n Revenue from continuing operations fell 22.8% to \u00a3188.8 million (\u20ac217 million) during the first half of 2026. Part of the decline resulted from Headlam\u2019s deliberate withdrawal from lower-margin business, but weak flooring demand left the company unable to reduce costs quickly enough.<\/p>\n Headlam had expected its restructuring programme to reduce losses during 2026 and provide a route back to profitability in 2027. Continued losses and breached financing covenants left the board without sufficient time or funding to complete the programme outside an insolvency process.<\/p>\n The company had already reduced its continental European operations. In August, Headlam sold its Dutch businesses to an entity managed by Rcapital Partners for \u20ac850,000. After transaction costs, approximately \u20ac680,000 was expected to remain available for working capital.<\/p>\n Distribution centres remain operational<\/strong><\/p>\n Administration does not currently mean that Headlam will disappear from the British flooring market. Its 17 distribution centres and 48 surviving outlets continue to accept and fulfil orders while Interpath works on the CVA and refinancing.<\/p>\n The immediate reduction has instead fallen on the local outlet network. Closing 28 locations will lower property, staffing and inventory costs, but it also reduces convenient access for smaller contractors accustomed to collecting flooring and installation materials locally.<\/p>\n Headlam still owns a substantial operating platform, including national logistics infrastructure, established supplier relationships and access to thousands of independent customers. Those assets could attract investors or industry buyers if the proposed restructuring cannot be completed in its present form.<\/p>\n The administration process will determine whether the network remains within a smaller Headlam business or is eventually sold.
