Sawlog and pulpwood buyers have become less aggressive as lumber and pulp producers attempt to bring raw-material costs back into line with weaker product markets.

Mellanskog reduced its prices on September 1 for new contracts in Gotland, Stockholm, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västmanland, Örebro and Värmland. The basic price for standard spruce sawlogs was cut by SEK 50/m³fub (€4.55/m³). Pine and spruce small logs were reduced by SEK 25/m³fub (€2.30/m³), while pulpwood prices were also lowered by SEK 25/m³fub (€2.30/m³).

The September adjustment was Mellanskog’s second major reduction of 2026. On April 9, the cooperative cut sawlog prices by SEK 30–150/m³fub (€2.70–13.65/m³), depending on species and region. New basic prices for softwood pulpwood were set at SEK 410–460/m³fub (€37.30–41.80/m³), while fuelwood was reduced to SEK 300–320/m³fub (€27.30–29.10/m³).

Following the latest change, Mellanskog’s basic price is SEK 435/m³fub (€39.55/m³) for softwood pulpwood and SEK 415/m³fub (€37.75/m³) for birch pulpwood. Regional differences mean that the two Mellanskog reductions cannot be combined into one figure for every assortment. For sawlogs affected by both rounds, however, the cumulative reduction can reach SEK 80–200/m³fub (€7.30–18.20/m³), depending on species and local price list.

Other major buyers have moved in the same direction. Sveaskog reduced sawlog prices in northern Sweden by SEK 50/m³fub (€4.55/m³) for pine and SEK 25/m³fub (€2.30/m³) for spruce. Södra has also moved away from the high procurement prices and premiums offered during the strongest phase of the market, although its regional lists do not provide one uniform national reduction.

Official statistics show how far the market had already fallen before the September cuts. The average price for pine sawlogs declined 12% during the second quarter to SEK 855/m³fub (€77.70/m³), while spruce sawlogs fell 9% to SEK 1,059/m³fub (€96.30/m³). Softwood pulpwood declined 8% to SEK 566/m³fub (€51.45/m³).

Compared with the second quarter of 2025, pine sawlogs were 17% cheaper and spruce sawlogs 14% lower. Pine has recorded the sharper correction, partly because storm-damaged timber increased availability in central Sweden, while suitable fresh spruce sawlogs remained tighter.

Swedish timber prices are still high compared with the period before the 2024–2025 rally. The two Mellanskog reductions, together with the cuts introduced by Sveaskog and other buyers, show that the correction continued after the second quarter and had not reached its end by September.

Sweden’s timber market entered September with another round of price reductions, extending the retreat from the record levels reached in 2025.
