The Lumber Manufactory\u2019s plant in New Albany has annual capacity of 45 million board feet, equivalent to approximately 106,000 m\u00b3, placing it well below the largest North American or Nordic operations. Its announced investment of more than \u20ac12.9 million is also modest by the standards of a modern greenfield sawmill.<\/p>\n<p>What makes New Albany different is not its size. It is the attempt to apply the logic of a technology startup to one of the most capital-intensive, cyclical and geographically constrained parts of the forest industry.<\/p>\n<p>The Lumber Manufactory, or TLM, was established in 2023 and plans to develop more than a dozen sawmills across the United States before 2030. Instead of treating every plant as a separate engineering project, the company wants to create a standardised mill that can be deployed repeatedly in regions where timber growth exceeds local processing capacity.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>New Albany, which started production in August 2026, is the first test.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the company are people and investors more commonly associated with aerospace, defence technology and venture-backed manufacturing than with lumber. CEO and co-founder Michael Grasso previously worked at Blue Origin and rocket-engine company Adranos, later acquired by Anduril. Co-founder Andrew Arsht came from law rather than sawmilling. Other members of the team have experience at companies including Nvidia and Blue Origin.<\/p>\n<p>Its investors include Cantos, Susa Ventures, Slow Ventures, Banter, Ravelin Capital and Convective Capital. These are not timber companies seeking another outlet for their forests. They are financial backers making a bet that sawmill construction and operation can be standardised, digitised and repeated faster than the industry has traditionally managed.<\/p>\n<p>That is a far more ambitious proposition than opening one mill in Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The sawmill is the prototype<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TLM\u2019s New Albany plant represents an investment of more than \u20ac12.9 million and is expected to create over 50 jobs. It produces Southern Yellow Pine dimensional lumber from the large pine resource surrounding the site.<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi supported the project through its MFLEX incentive programme, while Union County and workforce-development organisation AccelerateMS also participated. For local forest owners, the mill creates another buyer for sawtimber in a region where forest growth has run ahead of removals for years.<\/p>\n<p>The location therefore follows conventional sawmill logic. Logs are bulky and expensive to transport over long distances, so the factory must be positioned close to a sustainable procurement area. Mississippi has the pine resource, harvesting contractors, truck capacity and forestry workforce required to supply a new operation.<\/p>\n<p>The unconventional part is what TLM intends to do with the plant after proving that it works.<\/p>\n<p>New Albany is both a commercial sawmill and a development site for the technology and operating systems intended for later mills. The company wants to standardise the equipment configuration, production controls, software, procurement processes and construction methods so that subsequent plants can be built from a common industrial platform.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the venture-capital argument begins. A conventional sawmill is a site-specific industrial asset. Its design depends on the local species, log diameters, product mix, labour market, energy supply and customers. TLM wants to preserve enough flexibility for local conditions while standardising enough of the plant to reduce the cost and time required for each new project.<\/p>\n<p>The first mill will show whether those two objectives can coexist.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43215\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43215\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwoodmarketsinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/LumberManu.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Southern Yellow Pine logs entering The Lumber Manufactory\u2019s New Albany sawmill, the first test of its planned network of standardized US mills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Old cutting principle, new controls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the more surprising parts of the project is TLM\u2019s use of an updated frame-saw concept. Frame saws are among the oldest mechanised methods of converting logs into lumber. Modern high-capacity softwood mills more commonly rely on circular saws, band saws or chipper-canters combined with scanning and optimisation systems.<\/p>\n<p>TLM has not chosen the older principle out of nostalgia. The company\u2019s concept combines relatively simple mechanical cutting with modern sensors, electronic controls and production software.<\/p>\n<p>A frame saw uses a group of comparatively thin blades moving together through the log. For suitable log diameters and stable production patterns, the system can limit kerf losses and reduce the amount of wood converted into sawdust. Boards can subsequently be edged according to their individual geometry and quality.<\/p>\n<p>The trade-off is speed and flexibility. A frame saw is not automatically superior to the high-throughput systems used by the largest Southern Yellow Pine producers. Performance depends on log size, feed speed, sawing pattern, blade behaviour, downtime and the value recovered from the resulting boards.<\/p>\n<p>TLM\u2019s argument is that digital control can remove some of the disadvantages traditionally associated with the technology. Sensors and software can monitor the cutting process, adjust operating parameters, collect production information and identify maintenance requirements. The company is effectively placing modern controls around a proven mechanical principle rather than trying to invent an entirely new method of cutting wood.<\/p>\n<p>This also fits the economics of its proposed network. A smaller regional mill does not need to match the hourly output of a plant consuming several million tonnes of logs. It needs to reach an investment and operating cost that remains viable with a smaller procurement radius and lower total production.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the calculation works will depend less on the age of the cutting principle than on recovery, uptime, labour requirements and the value TLM obtains for its entire output.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why venture capital normally avoids sawmills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sawmills have few of the characteristics traditionally sought by venture-capital investors. They require large physical assets, carry substantial inventories and operate in a market where finished-product prices can change much faster than log costs.<\/p>\n<p>A software company can add customers without building another factory. A sawmill cannot increase production without buying, transporting and processing more logs. Every additional region requires a new timber supply, workforce, permits, kilns, maintenance capacity and access to lumber markets.<\/p>\n<p>The business is also cyclical. A mill can operate efficiently and still lose money when lumber prices fall below the combined cost of logs, conversion and transport. Unlike a software subscription, lumber is largely a commodity. Buyers do not generally pay a large premium because the producer describes its manufacturing system as modular.<\/p>\n<p>This makes TLM an unusual venture-capital investment. Its financiers are not simply funding a mill; they are funding the claim that the difficult parts of sawmilling can be converted into repeatable systems.<\/p>\n<p>The company is also developing a platform intended to connect forest owners, harvesting contractors, transport providers and mills. If successful, this could give TLM a clearer view of available timber, logging costs and procurement conditions around each plant.<\/p>\n<p>This may prove more important than the cutting technology itself. Machinery suppliers already offer advanced scanning, optimisation and mill-control systems. The less developed part of the market is the connection between fragmented private forest ownership and industrial wood demand.<\/p>\n<p>The US South contains millions of private forest owners, many of whom sell timber only periodically. Building a more transparent and efficient route between those owners and local mills could reduce procurement friction. It will not, however, remove the need for foresters, loggers, hauliers and experienced timber buyers. A digital platform can organise information; it cannot harvest or transport a tree.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43216\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwoodmarketsinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/lumbermanufactory.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The classic frame saw's connecting rod combined with sensors, automation and digital control systems.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The timber surplus is real, but not every tree is a sawlog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TLM\u2019s expansion case rests on a statement frequently repeated by its executives: the United States has a timber surplus and a lumber manufacturing deficit.<\/p>\n<p>There is considerable truth in the first part, particularly in the South. Pine inventories expanded as plantations established during earlier investment cycles matured faster than demand. Mill closures in some regions reduced competition for timber, leaving forest owners with fewer outlets and depressing the value of smaller or less favourably located stands.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian lumber shipments to the US have also declined as duties and trade tensions increased the cost of imports. Adding efficient domestic production near underused timber resources therefore has a clear industrial logic.<\/p>\n<p>But national timber surpluses do not guarantee suitable sawmill supply.<\/p>\n<p>A new mill needs sufficient volumes of the correct species, diameter and quality within an economic hauling distance. It must compete with existing sawmills, pulp mills, panel plants and biomass users. Timber that is technically available but located too far from New Albany, divided among inaccessible stands or unsuitable for dimensional lumber does not solve the mill\u2019s procurement requirement.<\/p>\n<p>The statement about a manufacturing deficit also needs qualification. The US South already contains some of the world\u2019s largest and most productive softwood lumber mills. Canadian and European groups have invested billions in acquisitions and greenfield capacity across the region. TLM is not entering an industrial vacuum. It will compete with companies that possess established forestry teams, experienced mill operators and national lumber sales networks.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity may exist between those large mills: procurement areas where timber is abundant but insufficient to support a conventional mega-mill, or where a smaller modular plant can operate closer to the forest.<\/p>\n<p>That is the market New Albany must prove.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The investment figure raises as many questions as it answers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At more than \u20ac12.9 million, the announced investment is low for a complete new sawmill with annual production capacity above 100,000 m\u00b3. The figure becomes more plausible if the site uses an existing industrial building, a simplified process layout, refurbished components, phased installation or equipment supplied under financing arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Public permitting documents indicate that the operation includes debarking and log processing, sorting and stacking, planing, residual handling and four natural gas-fired batch kilns. It is therefore more than a basic portable or temporary sawmill.<\/p>\n<p>The low capital requirement is central to the company\u2019s case. If TLM can repeatedly build mills of this size for a similar amount, it may reach production costs that allow regional plants to compete without the throughput of the industry\u2019s largest facilities.<\/p>\n<p>But announced project investment does not always represent the full economic cost of bringing a mill to stable production. Additional capital may be required for log inventories, spare parts, commissioning, working capital, site improvements and the losses commonly incurred during ramp-up.<\/p>\n<p>This distinction becomes important when New Albany is used as a template for another 11 or 12 locations. A low first-stage construction figure cannot be treated as the final cost of a nationwide network.<\/p>\n<p>The same caution applies to TLM\u2019s funding. The company raised \u20ac3.5 million in seed capital in 2024. A later US securities filing concerned an offering of up to approximately \u20ac30.1 million. Public reports indicate that most of that amount may have been raised, but it should not automatically be described as a conventional \u20ac30 million Series B unless the company confirms the structure and completion of the round.<\/p>\n<p>Venture-backed companies are accustomed to presenting expansion targets early. The forest industry will judge the model differently: by log costs, recovery, kiln performance, production per employee, grade yield, customer claims and cash generated through a complete lumber cycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twelve mills by 2030 is the real experiment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Opening New Albany is an industrial achievement, but it does not yet prove the network strategy. One sawmill can be supported closely by its founders, engineers and suppliers. Twelve plants require repeatable procurement, maintenance, training, quality control and management.<\/p>\n<p>The timetable is demanding. To exceed 12 mills before 2030, TLM would have to identify and permit new sites, secure timber, arrange financing, order equipment, recruit local teams and bring plants into production at a pace rarely achieved in sawmilling.<\/p>\n<p>Standardisation can shorten parts of that process. It cannot make local conditions identical.<\/p>\n<p>A plant in Mississippi will not necessarily receive the same log mix as one in Georgia, Arkansas or the Pacific Northwest. Markets for residual chips, bark and sawdust vary by location. Kiln schedules change with species and product. Labour availability, electricity, gas, rail access and trucking costs also differ.<\/p>\n<p>TLM\u2019s system will therefore have to be standardised without becoming rigid. Too much customisation removes the savings of replication; too little leaves the mill poorly matched to its resource.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can the model survive a full lumber cycle?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New Albany is starting at a moment when US lumber manufacturing is receiving political support. Duties have restricted Canadian competition, policymakers want more domestic processing and Southern forest owners are looking for additional demand. These conditions strengthen the case for new capacity. They do not guarantee favourable margins.<\/p>\n<p>Southern Yellow Pine lumber prices remain cyclical, while large incumbent producers can alter production quickly. If housing demand weakens or too much new capacity enters the market, lumber prices can fall even when the local timber resource remains inexpensive. Smaller log costs help, but they do not protect a mill from a poor finished-product market.<\/p>\n<p>The advantage of TLM\u2019s smaller format would be lower fixed investment and the ability to match production more closely to regional timber supply. The risk is that smaller plants may have higher unit costs, less leverage in lumber sales and fewer options for distributing products across several markets.<\/p>\n<p>Its digital systems will be useful only if they improve physical results. Better reporting does not compensate for weak recovery. Predictive maintenance has value only if it reduces actual downtime. A timber marketplace is commercially relevant only if it delivers suitable logs at a lower total cost.<\/p>\n<p>New Albany will provide the numbers needed to distinguish between the two.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A technology company has entered an industry that cannot be virtualised<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Lumber Manufactory has identified a genuine imbalance. Parts of the US contain more timber than the existing industry is processing, while the country continues to import large volumes of softwood lumber. Smaller regional mills could create competition for forest owners and add domestic production without requiring the log supply of a million-cubic-metre operation.<\/p>\n<p>The company has also attracted a type of capital rarely seen in sawmilling. That could matter. The US technology sector has become increasingly interested in physical manufacturing, defence, energy and infrastructure after years in which venture funding concentrated on software. Lumber now fits into a larger investment story about rebuilding domestic industrial capacity.<\/p>\n<p>But a sawmill remains stubbornly physical. Logs are irregular, heavy and local. Machinery wears. Kilns take time. Customers reject packages. Lumber prices fall. Trucks arrive late. Production cannot be expanded by changing a line of code.<\/p>\n<p>TLM does not need to overturn those realities to succeed. It needs to show that a smaller, standardised mill can be built more cheaply, reach stable production faster and earn an acceptable return from timber resources that larger producers have left underused.<\/p>\n<p>If New Albany delivers those results, the important innovation will not be the return of the frame saw or the software wrapped around it. It will be proof that sawmill capacity can be developed as a repeatable industrial platform rather than as a succession of unrelated projects.<\/p>\n<p>If it does not, the plant will still produce lumber.
