Further expansion is expected in engineered wood, but additional construction demand will have to be matched by traceable supply, suitable sawlog production and more extensive reuse of structural timber.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Subhra Bhattacharjee, Director General of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), presented this assessment in an interview with Euronews, placing Europe alongside North America as one of the world\u2019s fastest-growing markets for timber construction. She argued that engineered wood could help Europe deliver housing more quickly and at a lower cost, provided that industrial expansion is supported by responsible forest management and reliable raw-material supplies.<\/p>\n<p>The immediate opportunity for the wood industry lies in prefabricated structural systems and products such as cross-laminated timber, glued laminated timber and laminated veneer lumber. Their expansion creates additional outlets for structural softwood, but also requires closer coordination between forest owners, sawmills, component manufacturers, designers and contractors.<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee argued that Europe can expand timber construction without compromising technical performance. Progress in engineered wood has increased the dimensions, strength consistency and range of applications available to structural designers, allowing timber to enter building categories previously dominated by reinforced concrete and steel.<\/p>\n<p>The next stage is not simply to install more CLT or glulam capacity. The sector must move from individual demonstration buildings towards repeatable projects capable of generating predictable volumes. This will depend on design standardisation, earlier procurement decisions, compatible building regulations and sufficient numbers of contractors experienced in assembling prefabricated timber systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost advantage depends on prefabrication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwoodmarketsinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/subhra.jpeg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee estimated that timber construction can cost up to 25% less than conventional methods in favourable circumstances. She attributed the difference principally to lighter components, lower transport and handling requirements, reduced on-site labour and shorter construction schedules.<\/p>\n<p>For timber suppliers, the relevant comparison is therefore not limited to the price of the structural frame. Engineered wood may be more expensive than a conventional material when measured per cubic metre or against the initial cost of an individual component, while still reducing the total cost of the completed project.<\/p>\n<p>Factory production allows structural elements to arrive on site in the sequence required for assembly. This can shorten the period during which developers carry financing, equipment, labour and construction-stage insurance costs. The advantage is strongest where designs are finalised early, components are standardised and the supply chain is organised around production slots rather than last-minute purchasing.<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee nevertheless presented the 25% figure as a potential saving rather than a universal result. Cost performance varies according to the building type, local labour market, transport distance, national approval procedures and availability of domestic engineered wood capacity.<\/p>\n<p>In European markets where structural products or specialist installation teams must be brought in from abroad, some of the transport and construction savings may be lost. Repeated building formats, by contrast, offer manufacturers a better opportunity to spread design, engineering and certification costs over a larger volume.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bhattacharjee expects engineered wood demand to continue growing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee valued the timber construction market at approximately EUR 4.3 billion and put average annual growth at around 10%. She said European and Swiss public institutions have supported research intended to expand the construction applications of engineered wood, while product development continues to improve structural and fire performance.<\/p>\n<p>For sawmills and engineered wood producers, the rate of growth is commercially significant even if timber remains a relatively small part of the total European construction market. Greater use of CLT, glulam and LVL can increase demand for strength-graded material and create higher-value outlets beyond standard construction softwood.<\/p>\n<p>The raw-material effect will not be uniform. CLT production requires substantial volumes of kiln-dried and strength-graded lamellas, while glulam and LVL plants have different requirements regarding species, dimensions, visual characteristics and mechanical properties. New manufacturing investments must therefore be aligned with the regional sawlog base and the ability of nearby sawmills to supply consistent input material.<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee also pointed to engineered wood\u2019s capacity to use raw material that might not meet the specifications of traditional solid structural products. Industrial grading, lamination and veneer processing can convert smaller dimensions or selected lower-value assortments into products with consistent structural characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>This does not mean that every low-grade log can be redirected into construction. Product standards, recovery rates, adhesive systems and strength requirements continue to determine the usable feedstock. The expansion of engineered wood will consequently affect both sawlog selection and the way sawmills sort, dry and grade their output.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insurance has yet to catch up with product development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee identified insurance as one of the areas where market practices remain behind technical progress. Engineered wood products and mass-timber systems can be designed to meet fire-resistance requirements, but some insurers continue to assess timber buildings using risk assumptions developed for conventional light-frame construction.<\/p>\n<p>She said communication between constructors, manufacturers and insurers is increasing and that insurance rates are already beginning to stabilise in areas with lower fire exposure. Wider adoption will nevertheless require more project data and a clearer distinction between different timber construction systems.<\/p>\n<p>For manufacturers, the problem extends beyond the documented fire resistance of an individual CLT panel, glulam beam or LVL component. Insurers assess the complete building, including connections, cavities, fa\u00e7ade systems, temporary exposure during construction, moisture management and the cost of repairing water or fire damage.<\/p>\n<p>The industry must therefore demonstrate performance at building level rather than relying exclusively on product certification. Standardised details, documented installation procedures and better construction-stage controls could become as important to market growth as further improvements in the structural products themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee maintained that timber construction does not require a compromise in quality. Her argument is that product innovation has already advanced more quickly than the commercial systems surrounding it, particularly insurance, procurement and regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FSC links market growth to long-term raw-material availability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee stressed that timber construction cannot expand indefinitely without corresponding changes in forest management and material allocation. In her assessment, responsible sourcing is not an additional condition placed on growth but a requirement for maintaining reliable supplies over the longer term.<\/p>\n<p>She identified three conditions for scaling timber construction in Europe. Forest management must maintain biodiversity and other ecosystem functions while protecting workers and forest-dependent communities. The value chain must give greater priority to producing wood suitable for construction. Reuse, recycling and cascading use must then be expanded so that structural timber remains in material applications for as long as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal to prioritise high-value construction timber has direct implications for forest owners and sawmills. Growing demand for structural products could strengthen markets for suitable sawlogs, but forestry decisions made today will determine the species, dimensions and qualities available many years from now.<\/p>\n<p>At sawmill level, higher structural demand increases the importance of log sorting, scanning, strength grading, kiln capacity and recovery optimisation. The additional value does not come from processing a greater volume alone; it depends on identifying and directing each part of the log towards the application capable of generating the highest return.<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee\u2019s position also places timber construction within the continuing competition for European wood resources. Sawmills, panel producers, pulp mills, packaging manufacturers and the energy sector already compete for different assortments and industrial residues. If construction demand rises rapidly, the allocation of sawlogs, chips, sawdust and recovered wood will become more commercially and politically sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>FSC certification and chain-of-custody systems are expected to play a larger role if developers, investors and public authorities demand documented sourcing. This will create additional compliance requirements, but it may also give certified producers better access to construction projects with formal environmental procurement criteria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reuse must become part of the commercial model<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee argued that Europe will need to scale up the reuse, recycling and cascading of timber alongside primary production. Structural wood should remain in buildings for as long as possible and, where technically feasible, be recovered for another material use before being directed towards energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>For engineered wood manufacturers, circularity remains more complicated than it is for traditional sawn timber. Adhesives, coatings, metal connectors, panel dimensions and project-specific machining can limit the options available after dismantling. Buildings intended for future disassembly may therefore require different connection systems and more detailed records of the components installed.<\/p>\n<p>Material passports and traceable product documentation could eventually create a secondary market for recovered beams and panels, although such systems remain at an early stage. Producers will also need standards capable of determining whether reused components retain the mechanical properties required for a second structural application.<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee sees cascading use as essential because it increases the economic value obtained from a limited forest resource. Directing suitable wood first into long-lived construction products can support higher returns across the supply chain while delaying its eventual conversion into energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expansion will favour integrated supply chains<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee does not expect timber to eliminate concrete or steel from European construction. She instead envisages a greater role for hybrid systems combining construction timber with lower-carbon cement and recycled steel.<\/p>\n<p>This may be the most commercially realistic route for the European wood sector. Hybrid buildings allow timber to replace mineral materials in floors, walls, roofs or selected load-bearing elements without requiring developers to abandon familiar concrete cores, foundations and connection systems.<\/p>\n<p>The companies best positioned to benefit are likely to be those capable of linking raw-material procurement, sawmilling, engineered wood manufacturing, digital design and prefabrication. Isolated production capacity will be less valuable if it is not connected to a reliable project pipeline and contractors able to install the finished components.<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharjee\u2019s forecast of 10% annual growth indicates substantial room for additional timber consumption, but the market will not be determined by manufacturing capacity alone.
