Versowood has marked its 80th anniversary with a blunt message about the business that built it: lumber markets do not reward comfort, and survival depends on changing with them. From a single sawmill established in Vierum\u00e4ki in 1946, the company has become Finland\u2019s largest privately owned wood-processing group, selling its products across more than 60 countries while continuing to invest in an industry many competitors have treated as structurally unattractive.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the anniversary celebration in Vierum\u00e4ki, CEO and owner Ville Kopra did not present those eight decades as a smooth expansion story. The company\u2019s history has included changes in ownership, difficult cycles, weak construction markets and periods in which the economics of sawmilling came under severe pressure.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe sawmill industry has never been an easy business, but we have made it through everything,\u201d Kopra said, according to participants at the event.<\/p>\n
Seven profitable months have become seven weeks<\/strong><\/p>\n The comment comes at a difficult point for Finnish sawmills. Producers are paying high prices for sawlogs while demand for lumber remains weak, particularly in European construction. The margin between raw-material costs and achievable selling prices has narrowed, while faster market changes have made production planning and inventory management considerably harder.<\/p>\n Kopra has described how sharply the commercial rhythm of the industry has changed. An old sawmill saying held that seven lean years would eventually be followed by seven profitable months. According to the Versowood CEO, the stronger part of the cycle may now last only seven weeks.<\/p>\n For producers, a temporary improvement in lumber prices can disappear before it repairs the losses accumulated during the downturn. A mill may buy logs at prices established during a tight raw-material market, only to sell the resulting lumber after demand has weakened again. Companies carrying large inventories, rigid production structures or excessive debt can quickly find themselves in trouble.<\/p>\n Versowood\u2019s answer has not been to retreat from sawmilling. It has continued to build scale, improve production efficiency and expand its access to raw material and customers. This puts the company against a Nordic trend in which several integrated forest groups have reduced sawmill capacity, sold production assets or directed capital toward pulp, packaging and new biomaterials.<\/p>\n The acquisition of UPM\u2019s Korkeakoski sawmill, completed in January 2026, was the latest major step. The transaction added another established production site to Versowood\u2019s network and included a longer-term partnership under which UPM continues to supply sawlogs to the mill and purchases by-products for its pulp mills.<\/p>\n Versowood increased its sawmill exposure while the Finnish industry was struggling with weak construction demand, expensive logs and the prospect of further capacity reductions. Instead of waiting for a clear recovery, the group strengthened its production base during the downturn.<\/p>\n Its model assumes that sawmilling will remain cyclical, capital-intensive and dependent on tight margins. Scale, efficiency and access to numerous export markets are intended to keep the plants running when individual markets weaken.<\/p>\n Feet in the forest, eyes on the world<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cFeet in the forest, eyes on the world,\u201d was how Kopra summarised the company\u2019s position during the anniversary celebration.<\/p>\n The first half of the phrase describes Versowood\u2019s dependence on Finnish forests and domestic industrial sites. The second describes a company whose growth has been built largely outside Finland. Versowood sells lumber and other wood products to around 65 countries, with exports generating most of its business. Finnish spruce and pine are supplied to construction, packaging and industrial customers across Europe and in more distant markets.<\/p>\n This geographical sprea is important because lumber demand does not rise and fall at the same time in every market. European construction may remain depressed while purchasing improves in North Africa, the Middle East or Asia. Currency movements, shipping costs, import restrictions and changes in local supply can open and close sales opportunities within a short period. Mills tied to one region or a small group of customers have less room to respond.<\/p>\n Kopra has also challenged the belief that Finland must continually raise the degree of wood processing to create value. His position is direct: if customers around the world want Finnish lumber cut precisely to their required dimensions and quality, there is no commercial reason to transform it into another product simply to claim a higher degree of processing.<\/p>\n Large Finnish forest companies have invested heavily in new materials, textile products, biofuels and packaging technologies, often in search of margins above those available from conventional forest products. Kopra has questioned how many of these projects have developed into commercially viable businesses at industrial scale.<\/p>\n Versowood has chosen another route. Sawmilling remains the core operation, supported by glulam, treated wood, packaging, wooden infrastructure and energy products manufactured from sawmill residues. This structure allows the company to use different parts of the log and direct lumber internally toward products such as glulam beams, pallets and cable drums.<\/p>\n Technology in a low-margin industry<\/strong><\/p>\n Versowood\u2019s plants bear little resemblance to the old image of sawmilling as a low-technology activity. Cameras, X-ray scanners, robotics, CNC machinery and computer-controlled systems are used to identify log quality, optimise cutting patterns and match lumber with suitable customer orders. Artificial intelligence is expected to become more widely used in wood procurement, production planning and administration.<\/p>\n The financial purpose is straightforward. When earnings are measured in relatively small amounts per cubic metre, accurate grading, higher recovery and lower downtime can decide whether a plant makes money. An X-ray scanner capable of detecting dense, slowly grown wood inside a log can direct that material toward applications where customers will pay for its mechanical properties.<\/p>\n Technology also changes the type of labour required by the industry. Modern sawmills need operators and production managers who understand automation, scanning, data systems, drying, grading and process control. Kopra has warned that Finland\u2019s wood-industry education network has narrowed even as the technical demands placed on workers have increased.<\/p>\n Versowood\u2019s average employment relationship lasts around 12 years, while some employees have remained with the company for more than four decades. For a producer operating several plants in smaller Finnish communities, retaining this knowledge is part of production continuity, not merely a recruitment issue.<\/p>\n Wood construction remains the largest unexploited market<\/strong><\/p>\n Versowood sees wood construction as one of the most credible sources of additional demand. Finland has extensive forest resources and an advanced sawmill sector, yet concrete continues to dominate much of the domestic construction market. Kopra believes building regulations have historically worked against wood, although industrial prefabrication, carbon calculations and pressure to improve construction productivity could gradually alter the balance.<\/p>\n Glulam is central to this opportunity. Large structural components can be manufactured under controlled factory conditions and delivered for rapid assembly in bridges, sports halls, offices and residential buildings. A larger market for these components would create demand for selected lumber grades and provide sawmills with a practical route into higher-value construction products.<\/p>\n The present market offers little reason for complacency. European construction has not produced the recovery many suppliers expected, while Finnish sawlog prices remain difficult to reconcile with weak prices for finished lumber. Versowood is not basing its investments on an immediate surge in consumption. Its position is that lumber remains a product with global demand and that producers with modern plants, sufficient scale and several sales markets can continue operating through the weak phases.<\/p>\n From one sawmill to Finland\u2019s largest private wood processor<\/strong><\/p>\n Versowood began in 1946, when a sawmill was established in the village of H\u00e4rk\u00e4l\u00e4 in Vierum\u00e4ki. The Kolli family subsequently developed the operation, increased production and opened export markets. Salt-treated wood and later glulam were added alongside sawmilling. In 1990, the company then known as Vierum\u00e4en Teollisuus was sold to the Kopra sawmilling family.<\/p>\n During the following 36 years, it expanded from one industrial site into Finland\u2019s largest privately owned wood-processing group. Ownership was consolidated under Ville Kopra in 2022. The group now operates a network of sawmills and further-processing plants producing lumber, glulam, treated wood, packaging and energy products.<\/p>\n An 80-year history cannot guarantee that the next market cycle will be profitable. It shows that Versowood has already passed through many cycles that appeared hostile to sawmilling.
