Tr\u00e4 & Teknik 2026 brought together 133 exhibitors and recorded 3,083 visits in Gothenburg, as Nordic wood companies focused on extracting more value from raw material, reducing production bottlenecks and connecting machinery with increasingly integrated digital control systems.<\/p>\n

The event, also known internationally as Wood Products & Technology, was held at the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre from 25\u201327 August. Organisers shortened the exhibition from four days to three, creating a more concentrated format for machinery suppliers, sawmills, secondary wood processors, timber construction companies and technology developers.<\/p>\n

The technical programme extended from primary breakdown and solid wood optimisation to robotics, production planning, traceability, component manufacturing and end-of-line packaging. The exhibition was accompanied by 60 sessions involving 80 speakers, with regulation, artificial intelligence, skills and raw material availability among the most frequently discussed subjects.<\/p>\n

Despite the shorter format, exhibitors reported that the quality of industrial visitors remained high. IK Teknik CEO Ola Iversen said the company met a similar number of decision-makers to previous editions, despite initial concerns that a smaller event might reduce commercial traffic.<\/p>\n

Optimisation moves beyond individual machines<\/strong><\/p>\n

The equipment displayed and discussed in Gothenburg showed how investment priorities are moving from individual high-capacity machines towards connected production systems. Sawmills are increasingly looking for combinations of scanning, optimisation, automated handling and production software that can improve recovery without requiring a corresponding increase in log consumption or labour.<\/p>\n

System TM participated with MiCROTEC and Swedish partner LOAB, presenting optimisation systems for solid wood processing. The cooperation links scanning and wood-quality data with automated cross-cutting and material handling, allowing processors to make production decisions according to the characteristics and potential value of each board. System TM said its participation focused on integrated optimisation solutions rather than stand-alone equipment.<\/p>\n

This approach is becoming more important as Nordic processors face expensive sawlogs, uncertain availability of particular log classes and pressure to increase the yield of saleable products from every cubic metre. A higher line speed provides limited economic benefit if defects are not identified accurately or if timber is directed towards a lower-value product than necessary.<\/p>\n

Modern optimisation systems combine geometric measurements with information about knots, cracks and other wood characteristics. The resulting data can be used to select cutting patterns, define board lengths and qualities, and allocate material to the most profitable order. Linking this information to planning software also allows plants to adjust production according to their order book rather than building inventories of standard products.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Robotics enters routine downstream operations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Automation at Tr\u00e4 & Teknik was not restricted to sawing or cross-cutting. SPRINGER presented its RLS Lite robotic labelling system at the LOAB stand, demonstrating the use of robotics in a repetitive downstream operation that can otherwise require manual handling.<\/p>\n

Automated labelling is a relatively small part of the production line but is important for traceability, grading and order control. A system must identify the correct product, apply the appropriate label and maintain the connection between the physical board or package and its digital production record.<\/p>\n

The same principle is increasingly being applied across stacking, packaging and dispatch. Signode attended with end-of-line packaging systems for lumber, an area in which automation can reduce manual strapping, improve package consistency and prepare finished products for storage and transport.<\/p>\n

Labour availability is accelerating interest in such systems. Nordic mills are not only seeking to reduce total staffing requirements but also to remove physically repetitive work from positions that are becoming difficult to fill. Operators are consequently moving towards supervision, maintenance and process control while robots and automated handling equipment perform more of the repeated mechanical tasks.<\/p>\n

Sawmill upgrades target existing bottlenecks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jartek used the event to present technology for modernising existing sawmills, including its Double Board Remover and AR Hub. The company\u2019s focus on targeted upgrades corresponds with an investment market in which many mills are improving individual sections rather than constructing complete new production lines.<\/p>\n

The Double Board Remover is designed to separate boards that remain together during handling, addressing a problem that can interrupt downstream flow and require manual intervention. Equipment of this type can produce measurable gains when it removes a recurring bottleneck, even if it does not increase the nominal speed of the main sawing line.<\/p>\n

The AR Hub applies augmented-reality tools to industrial service and technical support. Remote specialists can assist mill personnel with inspection, fault diagnosis or maintenance without being physically present at the plant. This can reduce stoppage time, particularly where a mill depends on technical expertise located in another country.<\/p>\n

Remote support is becoming a more important element in machinery investment decisions. Wood processors increasingly evaluate not only the purchase price and theoretical capacity of equipment but also its diagnostic capabilities, availability of service personnel and the time required to return a line to production after a failure.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

ERP systems connect orders with mill production<\/strong><\/p>\n

TimberTec presented software for sawmills, glulam and cross-laminated timber producers and timber traders through the DataPolarna stand. Its systems cover production planning, sales, logistics and controlling, allowing production data to move between the mill floor and commercial departments.<\/p>\n

For a sawmill, this connection can determine whether optimisation decisions correspond to actual customer requirements. Production planning software can combine log availability, kiln capacity, order specifications, delivery dates and line capacity instead of treating each production stage separately.<\/p>\n

Digital integration is also central to traceability. Wood companies must retain increasingly detailed information on raw material origin, processing and delivery. A production system that maintains the identity of products from log intake to final shipment reduces the need to reconstruct information manually for customers or regulatory reporting.<\/p>\n

Traceability was one of the main industry issues discussed during the fair, alongside raw material supply and skills. The three are closely connected: more detailed data requirements increase the administrative workload, while shortages of experienced employees encourage companies to automate data capture and reporting.<\/p>\n

More pressure to obtain value from each log<\/strong><\/p>\n

The exhibition\u2019s four main areas were resource efficiency, circular production, technology and timber construction. For machinery suppliers, these themes converged around a practical industrial objective: improving recovery and reducing material loss.<\/p>\n

Higher raw material costs make small improvements in yield financially significant. Better scanning can identify the most valuable use for a board, automated handling can reduce damage, and more accurate cutting can limit unnecessary trimming. Residual flows can also be separated and directed towards pulp, panels, pellets or energy production according to quality.<\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence appeared mainly as an extension of existing machine vision, optimisation and data analysis rather than as a separate production technology. Its industrial value depends on the quality of measurements, integration with machinery and the ability to convert a software recommendation into a physical action on the line.<\/p>\n

RISE participated as the event\u2019s innovation partner and organised workshops as part of a wider programme connecting research with industrial production. The Swedish Wood Protection Association and the Paper Province industrial cluster also held meetings during the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The programme indicated that Nordic wood processors are seeking technical improvements that can be implemented under current market conditions. Large greenfield projects remain possible, but much of the immediate demand concerns scanners, handling systems, software and automation that can be integrated into operating plants and deliver a defined improvement in recovery, uptime or labour productivity.<\/p>\n

Tr\u00e4 & Teknik recorded 133 exhibitors, 3,083 visits, 80 speakers and 60 programme sessions in its new three-day format. The next edition will be held in Gothenburg in 2028.
