IKEA is launching a major price-cutting programme across Europe, committing EUR 1.2 billion to lower prices in more than 20 markets from September. Selected furniture and home furnishing products will become around 15\u201325% cheaper, as the world\u2019s largest furniture retailer attempts to stimulate volumes in a European market still constrained by weak consumer spending and subdued housing activity.<\/p>\n
The programme involves Ingka Group, other IKEA franchisees and Inter IKEA Group. Rather than a temporary promotional campaign, the reductions will be incorporated into regular selling prices across substantial parts of the range.<\/p>\n
Germany, IKEA\u2019s largest national market, will see some of the broadest cuts. Prices for more than 1,500 products will fall by around 20% on average. In Italy, hundreds of products will become approximately 22% cheaper, while several hundred lines are also being reduced in the UK.<\/p>\n
Some of IKEA\u2019s core furniture ranges are included. In Germany, BEST\u00c5 TV benches are being reduced by 27%; in Italy, KALLAX products by as much as 29% and BEST\u00c5 frames by around 26%; while in the UK the BILLY bookcase is being cut by 28% and TROFAST storage combinations by 24%.<\/p>\n
IKEA is betting on volume<\/strong><\/p>\n The scale of the investment makes the announcement significant for the wider European furniture industry.<\/p>\n IKEA is effectively accepting lower margins in an attempt to increase store traffic, orders and unit volumes after two consecutive years of declining revenue. Previous price reductions introduced during FY2024 generated more visits and orders, encouraging the company to expand the strategy.<\/p>\n The timing also says much about the state of European furniture demand. The pandemic boom has long disappeared, while higher living costs, expensive housing and weaker residential activity continue to limit discretionary purchases.<\/p>\n Furniture is particularly exposed because demand is closely connected to moving home, household formation, renovation and residential construction. IKEA cannot solve those problems, but it can make purchasing cheaper.<\/p>\n Pressure moves down the furniture supply chain<\/strong><\/p>\n For European manufacturers, the strategy offers both potential additional volume and greater pressure on production costs.<\/p>\n A permanent 15\u201325% reduction in retail prices cannot be supported indefinitely through retailer margins alone. IKEA has identified product redesign, automation, energy savings and other efficiency improvements as ways of lowering costs.<\/p>\n That means suppliers are likely to face increasing pressure to manufacture more efficiently rather than simply quote lower prices.<\/p>\n Product engineering will be particularly important. Reducing material use, simplifying components, cutting machining operations, improving packaging density or fitting more products into each truck can produce relatively small savings per item that become substantial across millions of units.<\/p>\n For IKEA\u2019s large-volume programmes, even a EUR 1 reduction in manufacturing or logistics cost per unit can translate into millions of euros.<\/p>\n Potential boost for European wood-based panels<\/strong><\/p>\n The strategy is particularly relevant for the European wood products industry because much of IKEA\u2019s furniture supply chain remains located in Europe.<\/p>\n Poland, Italy, Lithuania and Germany are among its important sourcing countries, alongside a broader network of Central and Eastern European furniture and component manufacturers.<\/p>\n If lower prices succeed in increasing furniture sales, higher production volumes could translate into stronger demand for particleboard, MDF and other wood-based panels, as well as furniture components and packaging.<\/p>\n For panel producers, however, the situation is not straightforward. Furniture manufacturers will seek lower unit costs while panel mills continue to face their own expenses for wood raw material, recycled wood, resins, energy and transport.<\/p>\n Higher furniture volumes could ease that tension by improving factory utilisation throughout the supply chain. Without a meaningful volume recovery, maintaining substantially lower retail prices will become more difficult.<\/p>\n Germany could intensify European price competition<\/strong><\/p>\n Germany deserves particular attention. Cutting prices by an average of 20% across more than 1,500 products creates a new benchmark in Europe\u2019s largest furniture market.<\/p>\n The strongest effect is likely to be felt in standardised bedroom, storage, living-room and home-office furniture, where consumers can easily compare alternatives.<\/p>\n Competitors do not necessarily have to match IKEA\u2019s reductions, but they may find it harder to increase prices and could be pushed towards heavier promotional activity.<\/p>\n Premium manufacturers are less directly exposed. Mass-market furniture producers and retailers face a much more immediate challenge.<\/p>\n After several years in which the industry justified higher prices through rising timber, panel, energy, labour and transport costs, IKEA is now sending consumers the opposite message: significant furniture price reductions are possible again.<\/p>\n The key question is whether cheaper furniture creates new demand<\/strong><\/p>\n IKEA\u2019s EUR 1.2 billion programme is therefore more than a retail pricing decision. It is a large-scale test of European furniture demand.<\/p>\n If reductions approaching 20% generate substantially higher sales, European furniture factories, component suppliers and panel manufacturers could benefit from increased orders even as pressure on unit costs intensifies.<\/p>\n If volumes respond only weakly, the conclusion would be less encouraging. It would suggest that Europe\u2019s furniture downturn is being driven primarily by structural factors \u2014 particularly housing turnover, residential construction and cautious household spending \u2014 rather than furniture prices themselves.<\/p>\n IKEA has chosen not to wait for those conditions to improve.
