Large sawmills and furniture plants remain important, while a growing share of capital is moving into particleboard, LVL, I-joists, prefabricated building elements and increasingly automated processing.

The investment pipeline is substantial for a country of fewer than three million people. A new €200 million particleboard project is planned near Marijampolė, VMG has established one of Europe's larger integrated engineered-wood sites in Akmenė, a nearly €40 million prefabricated timber plant is entering production in the same region, and another €35 million is going into highly automated firewood processing near Jonava. At existing plants, producers including Grigeo Baltwood continue to modernise equipment rather than simply add commodity capacity.

The result is an increasingly unusual position in the European wood market: Lithuania is building industrial capacity for a construction market much larger than its own.

VMG: from particleboard and furniture into structural timber

VMG Group has become one of the clearest examples of that shift.

VMG Wood Solutions describes its particleboard operation as the largest in the Baltic states, with production of around 67,000 m³ per month, equivalent to roughly 804,000 m³/year if the monthly figure is annualised. The plant has around 51,000 m² of production and warehouse space.

But the more significant move has been into construction products. VMG Lignum Construction's integrated Akmenė production site represents an investment of around €110 million and produces three main structural products: LVL, structural particleboard and I-joists.

Published capacity reaches approximately 120,000 m³/year of LVL, 200,000 m³/year of structural particleboard and 15 million linear metres/year of I-joists.

The plant was designed for continuous LVL production and is highly automated. Raute supplied the LVL technology, while the site was integrated with particleboard production so that more of the incoming timber can be utilised within the same industrial complex. VMG says the plant supplies around 50 export markets.

That capacity is heavily dependent on foreign demand. VMG said this month that only around 1% of the LVL manufactured in Lithuania is currently consumed domestically. Its near-term objective is to reach 9,000 m³ of LVL production per month, against theoretical capacity of 120,000 m³/year. The Netherlands, Belgium and Scandinavian countries are among the markets absorbing Lithuanian engineered timber, leaving the country in the unusual position of having developed a sophisticated structural-wood manufacturing base considerably faster than its domestic mass-timber construction market.

Juodeliai remains a giant in primary processing

Juodeliai represents the other side of Lithuania's wood industry: very large-scale primary processing built around international markets.

The company specialises particularly in wooden pallet and packaging components and operates production sites in Marijampolė, Jūrė, Radviliškis and Akmenynai.

Its published figures put annual softwood lumber production at approximately 750,000 m³, with as much as 1.5 million m³ of roundwood processed annually. Around 91% of production is exported, with customers in 41 countries. Europe accounts for the largest share, but products also move to Asia, North America and North Africa.

The scale makes Juodeliai particularly relevant to the Lithuanian roundwood market. While much of the country's newer investment is moving downstream, Juodeliai remains one of the major industrial consumers connecting domestic timber supply with international packaging markets.

Stora Enso operates one of Lithuania's major sawmills

At Alytus, Stora Enso operates another major Lithuanian wood-processing site.

The sawmill has annual capacity of 210,000 m³ of softwood lumber and 115,000 m³ of processed wood products.

Its output is already considerably more diversified than that of a conventional sawmill. The product mix includes dried graded lumber, planed products and glued wood products, while the plant serves both European and overseas markets.

That export reach illustrates the broader Lithuanian model: relatively large processing facilities operating from a small domestic market and therefore designed from the outset around international sales.

IKEA Industry has an integrated panel-to-furniture operation

IKEA Industry Lithuania operates an integrated wood-based panel and furniture manufacturing base at Kazlų Rūda.

An older published production figure shows the operation producing 545,000 m³ of particleboard and 1.2 million pieces of finished furniture in 2016. A subsequent major redevelopment of the furniture operation doubled production capacity and added approximately 30,000 m² to the factory.

The site illustrates a long-standing strength of the Lithuanian industry: converting domestic wood and fibre into products that feed directly into large international manufacturing and retail networks rather than relying only on commodity lumber exports.

Grigeo Baltwood continues investing in hardboard

Grigeo Group has another significant position in Lithuania's panel industry through Grigeo Baltwood, a specialist in wet-process hard fibreboard.

The company produces around 25 million m² of hardboard per year. Hardboard is commonly reported in square metres rather than cubic metres because the product is manufactured in relatively thin panels of varying thickness. The production process uses logs and wood chips that are refined into fibres before wet forming and hot pressing.

Rather than installing an entirely new line, Baltwood is continuing to modernise its existing production base. Following the renovation of the Line 1 multi-opening press in 2022-23, the company has again selected Sunds Fibertech for another major overhaul.

The new project covers a new top table, main cylinders and heating platens, with installation scheduled for spring 2027. The investment is aimed primarily at press performance and reliability. For an established hardboard producer, this is a different investment strategy from the greenfield projects appearing elsewhere in Lithuania: incremental modernisation of an existing large-scale asset rather than additional headline capacity.

€200 million FT Board project could add another major panel producer

One of the largest projects now in Lithuania's wood industry is FT Board.

The Lithuanian government granted major-project status in June to a planned €200 million particleboard plant in the Marijampolė district. The project is expected to create 125 jobs and is being described by the government as one of the largest and most technologically advanced particleboard production complexes in the Baltic states.

A firm production-capacity figure has not yet been disclosed in the official project announcement, so it would be premature to put a cubic-metre number on the plant.

The investment is nevertheless significant in market terms. Lithuania already has major particleboard production at VMG and IKEA Industry; another €200 million greenfield operation would add a substantial new consumer of wood residues and other fibre raw materials.

Rietuva adds another €40 million to the Akmenė wood cluster

A second new investment illustrates the move from producing materials to producing increasingly complete building systems.

Rietuva is starting operations at a new factory in the Akmenė Free Economic Zone following an investment of almost €40 million. Of this, €8 million was provided from EU funds for construction of the factory building and job creation, while another €7.5 million supported the purchase of advanced production equipment.

The factory covers more than 20,000 m² and will produce wall, roof, floor and renovation panels as well as structural engineered-wood components.

Its products are intended both for new construction and the renovation of apartment and public buildings in Lithuania and export markets. The project is expected to create 158 jobs.

Its location is particularly interesting. Akmenė is developing into a genuine engineered-wood manufacturing cluster rather than simply hosting isolated plants, with VMG's LVL, structural particleboard and I-joist capacity providing an industrial base for downstream prefabrication.

Vli Timber puts €35 million into automated wood processing

Another €35 million investment is planned by Vli Timber in the Jonava district.

The company plans a fully automated plant producing high-calorific-value dried firewood, creating around 150 jobs. The Lithuanian government describes it as the world's first fully automated firewood production complex of its kind.

The product itself is less sophisticated than LVL or prefabricated construction elements, but the industrial logic is similar: processing more Lithuanian timber domestically rather than exporting lower-value raw material.

Lithuania's top wood players and major investments

<p style="font-size: 14px; Lithuania is not short of wood-processing technology or industrial scale. Its largest companies can produce hundreds of thousands of cubic metres annually, while the latest investment cycle is pushing further from raw timber into panels, structural products and prefabricated building systems.

Yet the domestic market remains small relative to this capacity. In LVL, the imbalance is extreme: around 99% of Lithuanian production is exported. Juodeliai similarly sends about 91% of its production abroad.

This makes the next investment cycle particularly dependent on European demand. The €200 million FT Board project could add another large panel operation if completed as planned, while VMG's existing LVL capacity still has room to increase utilisation. Rietuva is simultaneously creating downstream capacity capable of turning engineered timber into complete building components.

Lithuania is therefore moving in two directions at once: adding industrial capacity while moving that capacity further down the wood value chain. For European timber markets, the more important question may be less whether Lithuania can manufacture these products than whether construction demand elsewhere in Europe can absorb the volumes its factories are being built to produce.

Lithuania has long been one of Europe’s more export-oriented wood-processing countries, but the scale and direction of recent investment are changing the structure of the industry.
