Brazilian timber exporters are facing a sharp contraction in US business after American buyers cut and cancelled orders ahead of higher tariffs. Brazil's exports of major wood products fell 8% in value in the first half of 2026, while shipments to the US dropped by roughly one-third, accelerating efforts to redirect lumber and value-added products toward Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Brazil exported US$855.2 million (\u20ac728 million) across ten major timber-product categories in the first half of 2026, down 8% from US$929.5 million a year earlier, while volumes declined by around 6%.<\/p>\n
The decline was considerably sharper in the US market. US buyers had already started reducing orders before the latest tariff measures took effect, with Brazilian timber sales to the country falling by around 33%.<\/p>\n
The early pullback suggests that the impact was felt before tariffs physically reached incoming shipments. Importers sought to limit exposure to higher landed costs, while contracts were postponed or cancelled as buyers waited for greater clarity over which products would ultimately be covered.<\/p>\n
The US accounted for around 24.7% of Brazilian timber exports during the first half, making the sudden contraction particularly significant for mills geared toward American specifications.<\/p>\n
Pine lumber and value-added products take the biggest hit<\/strong><\/p>\n Pine lumber has been among the products most affected by weaker US purchasing.<\/p>\n US imports of Brazilian pine lumber fell approximately 37% in volume and 41% in value during the first half of the year. Mouldings and other further-processed wood products also recorded declines of around 40%.<\/p>\n For mills in Brazil's southern pine-producing regions, the impact extends beyond lower volumes. Industry reports point to suspended contracts, reduced industrial activity and negative margins as producers attempt to adjust output to weaker US demand.<\/p>\n The pressure is concentrated particularly in Paran\u00e1 and Santa Catarina, where much of Brazil's plantation pine sawmilling and further-processing capacity is located.<\/p>\n Tariff uncertainty changed buying before implementation<\/strong><\/p>\n The sequence of events is important for understanding the export decline.<\/p>\n Rather than waiting for higher duties to take effect, some US buyers adjusted procurement in advance. The approaching tariff deadline triggered a rush to reassess outstanding orders, followed by cancellations and reduced purchasing where the additional cost could not be absorbed.<\/p>\n The eventual tariff structure also proved less uniform than initially feared. Certain tropical logs, lumber, veneer, plywood and wood-pulp classifications were excluded, while products already covered by other US trade measures can receive different treatment.<\/p>\n As a result, Brazilian wood products do not face a single tariff rate. Exposure depends on the customs classification, with some affected products facing an additional 25% tariff and certain tariff combinations temporarily lifting the burden to as much as 35%.<\/p>\n The uncertainty itself has nevertheless become a commercial problem. Even where individual products are ultimately exempt, changes in purchasing decisions made ahead of implementation have already affected order books and trade flows.<\/p>\n Brazilian mills look beyond the US<\/strong><\/p>\n The loss of American business is accelerating a diversification effort that was already under way.<\/p>\n Brazilian producers are targeting Mexico and other Latin American countries, Europe, the Middle East and Asian markets for volumes previously sold to the US. One early indication of that shift can be seen at Paranagu\u00e1, where timber shipments to Mexico reportedly increased 33% in the first quarter.<\/p>\n But redirecting US-bound production is not straightforward.<\/p>\n American customers buy particular dimensions, grades and further-processed products, and manufacturers entering other markets may need different certification, specifications and commercial relationships. Alternative markets also do not currently have the capacity to absorb all of the volume displaced from the US at comparable prices.<\/p>\n This is particularly problematic for higher-value manufacturers. Commodity lumber can generally be redirected more easily than mouldings and processed products manufactured specifically for US construction and distribution channels.<\/p>\n Competition for alternative markets is increasing<\/strong><\/p>\n Brazilian producers are also not entering these markets alone. Competition from Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Mexico has been increasing, adding pressure to prices as Brazilian mills search for alternative outlets.<\/p>\n Weak Chinese demand provides another constraint. China's construction activity remained subdued during the summer, reducing the ability of Asia's largest wood-consuming market to provide an immediate alternative destination for additional Brazilian volumes.<\/p>\n Domestic demand offers only partial relief. Brazilian mills serving the local market faced weak conditions during June, while producer prices for the furniture industry moved higher. The divergence has left upstream timber producers with limited opportunities to compensate quickly for lost export orders.<\/p>\n Government financing provides a buffer<\/strong><\/p>\n The Brazilian government has announced a R$18.5 billion (\u20ac2.9 billion) financing programme for companies affected by the trade disruption.<\/p>\n The programme covers working capital, machinery and equipment, productive investment and expansion into new markets, although parts of the scheme still require regulation before becoming fully operational.<\/p>\n For exporters, the more difficult task will be commercial rather than financial. Replacing the US requires new customers, specifications and distribution networks, and potentially changes to production itself.<\/p>\n Brazil's timber industry is therefore entering the second half of 2026 with two adjustments taking place simultaneously: US buyers are reducing exposure to Brazilian products affected by tariffs, while Brazilian mills are racing to find destinations for volumes previously manufactured for the American market.<\/p>\n The 33% decline in US-bound business during the first half shows that this shift began well before the full tariff effect appeared in trade statistics.
