Pfeifer Group is directing investment towards automation, predictive maintenance and real-time production control rather than simply adding sawmill capacity, as European producers face high raw-material costs and a market that leaves little room for inefficient production. The Austrian timber group says decades of reinvesting earnings have allowed it to modernise during stronger cycles and enter weaker markets with a more competitive industrial base.<\/p>\n

For Pfeifer, the next gains in sawmilling are increasingly expected to come from extracting more output from existing assets.<\/p>\n

The group is already testing camera-based monitoring of production lines at several sites. Continuous image analysis is used to identify abnormal operating patterns before they develop into faults, with initial results indicating that the technology can reduce unplanned downtime.<\/p>\n

For high-volume sawmills, the economics are straightforward. A production stoppage reduces output while labour, energy and other fixed costs continue. Detecting a developing problem before a line stops can therefore improve both mill utilisation and production costs.<\/p>\n

The approach builds on technology already established in modern sawmills. Pfeifer has used automated quality scanners for years, inspecting boards during production, while robotic systems have taken over parts of timber handling and stacking.<\/p>\n

Investment shifts towards efficiency<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pfeifer CTO Clemens Pfeifer says new technology is assessed primarily against two questions: what it costs and what measurable benefit it produces.<\/p>\n

That approach is increasingly relevant to the European sawmill market. After years of substantial investment in new lines and additional capacity, producers are operating in a market where construction demand remains weak in several important countries and log costs remain high.<\/p>\n

Under those conditions, increasing nominal capacity has limited value if mills cannot run existing equipment at sufficiently high utilisation rates.<\/p>\n

Pfeifer's current investments consequently focus on areas such as automated quality control, production monitoring, fault detection and better use of operating data. The objective is to reduce downtime and unit production costs rather than simply increase theoretical sawing capacity.<\/p>\n

Real-time production data reaches the mill floor<\/strong><\/p>\n

The group has fully digitalised production-data collection and can analyse operating figures across different sites, periods and production categories.<\/p>\n

Production managers have direct access to these figures and Pfeifer is developing dashboards that consolidate the main performance indicators, allowing deviations to be identified more quickly during operation.<\/p>\n

The development is being carried out internally through the group's SAP interface.<\/p>\n

Pfeifer has also continued to standardise systems across its expanding European production network. Its Finnish sites went live with SAP on 1 June 2026, bringing them onto the group's common process and data platform.<\/p>\n

For an international sawmill group, this creates the possibility of comparing mill performance on a common basis rather than relying on separate systems at individual sites.<\/p>\n

Reinvestment rather than short-term expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pfeifer links its current investment capacity to a long-standing policy of putting earnings back into its industrial operations.<\/p>\n

According to Clemens Pfeifer, the company has used profitable periods to finance machinery, technology and productivity improvements before market conditions deteriorate. This reduces the need to make large catch-up investments when margins are already under pressure.<\/p>\n

The strategy differs from expansion based primarily on adding greenfield capacity. Investment can instead be directed at raising recovery, reducing labour requirements, limiting downtime and increasing the number of productive hours available from existing equipment.<\/p>\n

For sawmills operating with expensive logs, relatively small improvements in these areas can have a significant effect on margins.<\/p>\n

Log supply remains part of the investment equation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pfeifer also points to its access to spruce and pine as an advantage at a time of greater uncertainty in international raw-material and energy markets.<\/p>\n

The group's expansion in Finland has increased the importance of its Nordic production base and its access to locally available softwood resources. Pfeifer sees this security of raw-material supply as increasingly valuable during periods of geopolitical disruption.<\/p>\n

The combination of timber availability and modern production assets also affects where future investment can generate the best returns. A highly automated sawmill still requires sufficient volumes of suitable logs to maintain high utilisation.<\/p>\n

For Pfeifer, the investment case therefore increasingly combines the two: secure softwood supply and technology capable of extracting more production from each operating hour.<\/p>\n

European sawmill investment enters a different phase<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pfeifer's strategy points to a broader change in the economics of sawmill investment. Adding capacity was attractive when lumber demand was strong and additional production could readily be placed on the market. The current environment puts more emphasis on the cost of producing each cubic metre.<\/p>\n

Automation, scanner technology and robotics are already established across Europe's larger sawmills. The next step is increasingly the integration of those systems with continuous production data and predictive maintenance.<\/p>\n

Pfeifer's camera-monitoring project is an example of that shift. Instead of reacting after equipment fails, production data can potentially identify the conditions preceding a stoppage and allow intervention while the line is still running.<\/p>\n
