Monnet-Sève, Moulin, Archimbaud Labouheyre and Bois du Dauphiné all increased revenue by more than 10%.

Together, these four companies increased sales from about €215.6 million to €244 million, a gain of roughly 13%.

Monnet-Sève returned above the €100 million mark, with revenue rising 12.3% to €105 million after declining in both 2023 and 2024. EBITDA increased from €777,000 to €3.61 million, lifting its EBITDA margin from 0.8% to 3.4%.

Bois du Dauphiné recorded the fastest revenue growth in the comparison, at 25.3%, while Archimbaud Labouheyre increased sales 11.8% to €44.6 million.

For Archimbaud, however, the earnings development was considerably more restrained. EBITDA increased from €4.54 million to €4.93 million, leaving its margin at 11.1%, slightly below 11.4% in 2024.

Moulin records the sharpest margin recovery

Scierie Moulin stands out less for its 10.6% increase in revenue than for the change in profitability.

Sales rose from €56 million to €61.9 million, but EBITDA increased from only €689,000 to €5.9 million. Its EBITDA margin consequently jumped from 1.2% to 9.5%.

The improvement was also visible further down the income statement. Moulin's operating result returned to a positive €736,000 from a €4.51 million loss, while the net loss narrowed from €4.24 million to €387,000.

The numbers suggest that the recovery among the better-performing mills was not simply a question of selling more timber. Margins recovered considerably faster than turnover at several companies.

Hardwood producers show a flatter picture

The companies focused on hardwood moved differently.

Groupe Lefebvre's revenue declined around 3%, while its sawmilling operation Scierie Lefebvre slipped around 2%. Oak specialist Ducerf Scierie also recorded a modest decline in turnover.

The earnings picture was better than the revenue figures suggest. EBITDA increased at both Lefebvre and Ducerf despite slightly lower sales, pointing to relatively stable underlying profitability.

That creates a noticeable split in the accounts: the strongest softwood producers are expanding their top line again, while the hardwood businesses in the comparison are largely defending margins on flat or declining sales.

Recovery does not mean a return to peak earnings

The rebound also needs to be separated from the exceptional results recorded earlier in the decade.

Monnet-Sève's €105 million of revenue remains below the €128 million recorded in 2022, while EBITDA of €3.61 million compares with €10.1 million that year.

The difference is even larger at Moulin. Its €5.9 million EBITDA represents a dramatic recovery from 2024, but remains far below the €23.2 million generated in 2022.

Archimbaud Labouheyre generated €18.2 million of EBITDA on €61.3 million of revenue in 2023. Two years later, EBITDA stands at €4.93 million on €44.6 million of sales.

The figures therefore show companies recovering from a weak base rather than recreating the unusually high margins of 2022-23.

The gap between French sawmills is widening

At the smaller end of the comparison, results become more dispersed. Migeon increased turnover by almost 5%, while Mutelet recorded slightly lower sales but improved EBITDA. Genet moved sharply in the opposite direction, with revenue falling around 18% and EBITDA dropping to €0.24 million.

Taken together, the latest accounts show an increasingly differentiated French sawmill sector. Several of the larger softwood processors have returned to meaningful growth and are rebuilding margins, while hardwood companies remain much flatter and some smaller operators continue to lose turnover.

The latest financial accounts from French sawmills show a widening gap between companies returning to growth and those still losing turnover.
