Swedish wood products group Setra returned to an operating profit in the second quarter of 2026, helped by lower timber costs and internal efficiency measures, although weaker-than-expected softwood lumber prices continued to limit earnings.<\/p>\n

Setra reported an operating profit of SEK 15 million (\u20ac1.4 million) for April-June, compared with a loss of SEK 60 million (\u20ac5.5 million) in the same period last year. EBITDA improved to SEK 68 million (\u20ac6.2 million) from a loss of SEK 2 million (\u20ac0.2 million), while net sales increased by 9.5% to SEK 1.579 billion (\u20ac144.9 million) from SEK 1.442 billion (\u20ac132.3 million).<\/p>\n

The operating margin recovered to 0.9%, compared with -4.5% a year earlier. Setra remained marginally in the red at the bottom line, with a net loss of SEK 1 million (\u20ac0.1 million), compared with a SEK 57 million (\u20ac5.2 million) loss in Q2 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Lower log prices improve sawmill economics<\/strong><\/p>\n

The improvement comes after a difficult period for Swedish sawmills, when high raw-material costs squeezed margins while finished softwood lumber prices failed to keep pace.<\/p>\n

Setra said falling timber prices are now beginning to feed through into its results. Cost reductions have been reinforced by efficiency measures across the group, producing a considerably stronger second quarter both year on year and compared with the first three months of 2026.<\/p>\n

The recovery remains incomplete, however. Setra had expected higher selling prices for sawn wood products, but those increases have not materialised to the extent anticipated. Global demand remains weak and buyers continue to operate cautiously in an uncertain economic environment.<\/p>\n

The combination leaves the Swedish producer in a more favourable cost position than a year ago, but without the additional earnings support that a stronger softwood lumber market would normally provide.<\/p>\n

Building Solutions and Components back in profit<\/strong><\/p>\n

A further contribution came from Setra\u2019s Building Solutions and Components operations, which returned to a positive result during the quarter.<\/p>\n

The company linked the improvement to production adjustments implemented during 2025. The turnaround is significant for a business area that had been affected by the prolonged downturn in European construction and the resulting weakness in demand for processed wood products.<\/p>\n

Setra CEO Marcus Westdahl said the effect of both lower timber prices and continued operational improvements was now becoming visible in the group\u2019s profitability.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the company is dealing with the aftermath of storm Johannes, which generated large volumes of storm-damaged timber. Setra is working to process as much of this material as possible into wood products, adding another raw-material factor to a Swedish timber market already undergoing a sharp adjustment after the high price levels of 2025.<\/p>\n

Mal\u00e5 sawmill sale completed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Setra also completed the sale of Mal\u00e5 S\u00e5g AB to HS Timber Group on 30 June 2026.<\/p>\n

The divestment is part of Setra\u2019s decision to concentrate its industrial operations and investment programme on the Bergslagen region. Mal\u00e5 had been included as a wholly owned subsidiary of Setra Tr\u00e4varor since 1 March and is therefore still included in the second-quarter figures.<\/p>\n

The transaction reduces Setra\u2019s geographic footprint but gives the company a more concentrated production structure at a time when the Swedish sawmill sector is under pressure to improve utilisation and profitability.<\/p>\n

For the remainder of 2026, the development of raw-material costs and selling prices will be central to the profitability of Setra and the wider Swedish sawmill industry.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
