Mets\u00e4 Wood has started commercial production on the first line of its new Kerto LVL mill in \u00c4\u00e4nekoski, Finland, bringing the \u20ac300 million investment into its operational phase. The second production line is due to follow by the end of 2026, while the mill is expected to ramp up gradualgly towards its annual capacity of 160,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

The first production line at Mets\u00e4 Wood\u2019s new Kerto LVL mill in \u00c4\u00e4nekoski entered commercial operation during the second quarter of 2026, according to Mets\u00e4 Group\u2019s half-year reporting.<\/p>\n

The development puts the project ahead of the timetable communicated earlier this year. In its first-quarter report, Mets\u00e4 Group said both production lines were scheduled to begin commercial production towards the end of 2026. The first line has therefore moved into commercial operation several months earlier than that earlier schedule indicated.<\/p>\n

Commissioning work continues on the second line, which is expected to enter commercial production by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The plant is one of Mets\u00e4 Wood\u2019s largest individual investments. Once fully ramped up, its 160,000 m\u00b3 annual output will lift the company\u2019s total Kerto LVL capacity by around 50%. Mets\u00e4 Wood already produces Kerto LVL at its Lohja and Punkaharju plants in Finland.<\/p>\n

Around 400,000 m\u00b3 of logs required annually<\/strong><\/p>\n

The scale of the project is also significant from a raw-material perspective. Mets\u00e4 estimates that the \u00c4\u00e4nekoski mill will consume around 400,000 m\u00b3 of logs annually, sourced from Finland and predominantly consisting of spruce.<\/p>\n

The facility has been built next to Mets\u00e4 Group\u2019s existing \u00c4\u00e4nekoski bioproduct mill, allowing the two operations to share parts of the industrial infrastructure. Steam can be supplied from the bioproduct mill to the LVL operation, while wood chips generated in LVL production can be used elsewhere within the integrated site.<\/p>\n

The production building covers roughly 45,000 m\u00b2 on a site of around 50,000 m\u00b2. Mets\u00e4 expects the new mill to employ around 140\u2013150 people directly, with additional employment generated in logging, transport and other parts of the supply chain.<\/p>\n

Kerto LVL is primarily supplied to the construction sector, including structural beams, panels, elements and modular building systems. Mets\u00e4 has previously said the new capacity is primarily intended to serve the European construction market.<\/p>\n

Large capacity addition enters a subdued construction market<\/strong><\/p>\n

The start-up comes at a more difficult point in the construction cycle than when the investment was approved in 2023. Demand for engineered wood products remains restrained in several European markets following the prolonged slowdown in residential and commercial construction.<\/p>\n

That leaves Mets\u00e4 Wood ramping up a sizeable new production unit while utilisation and pricing across the wider European wood products sector remain under pressure.<\/p>\n

The increase is nevertheless substantial in structural terms. At full output, \u00c4\u00e4nekoski alone will add the equivalent of half of Mets\u00e4 Wood\u2019s previous Kerto LVL production capacity. Rather than reaching that level immediately, production will be increased in stages as the two lines move through commissioning and the commercial ramp-up.<\/p>\n

The first-line start therefore marks the beginning of a multi-year capacity build rather than an immediate arrival of 160,000 m\u00b3 of additional LVL on the market. The timing of the second line and the pace at which the plant approaches full utilisation will determine how quickly the new Finnish volumes become visible in European supply.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
