China’s lumber imports from Russia fell 22% year on year.

The strengthening of the ruble has made alternative markets in Central Asia and the Middle East more attractive to Russian exporters. Railway capacity in the Russian Far East also remains tight, while high cross-border logistics costs have reduced the competitiveness of shipments to China.

At the same time, Russian policies encouraging greater domestic processing and higher-value production have reduced incentives for some producers to export basic lumber products.

Supply from Europe has also weakened. Availability of European spruce and Nordic softwood lumber has declined, while New Zealand continues to focus predominantly on log exports and has only limited capacity to replace lost lumber volumes.

Demand conditions inside China remain an equally important factor. Weakness in the property sector and home decoration industry continues to weigh heavily on lumber consumption.

Construction, formwork, furniture, wooden doors, flooring and customised interior products are among the largest end-use markets for lumber in China. Weak new residential construction has particularly affected softwood lumber demand.

The recovery in housing completions has also fallen short of expectations and has yet to generate a significant improvement in furniture and higher-value housing demand.

Furniture and home furnishing producers remain cautious. Many companies continue to report insufficient orders and are controlling raw-material purchases rather than holding large inventories.

Seasonal factors added further pressure. Heavy rainfall in several provinces, including Guangxi, reduced activity in construction and other wood-consuming sectors during parts of the first half.

Higher costs make importers more cautious

Import economics have also become less favourable. International lumber prices increased despite weaker Chinese buying, with the average CIF price of imported lumber rising 13% year on year.

Processing margins in China remain thin, encouraging factories to reduce purchases of higher-priced imported lumber and prioritise existing inventories.

Port inventories were relatively high at the beginning of 2026. Traders therefore concentrated on reducing stocks during the first months of the year and slowed new purchasing.

As these inventories were gradually consumed, lumber imports recorded a month-on-month rebound by June.

Exchange-rate fluctuations and higher cross-border freight costs have further reduced the margins available to lumber importers, reinforcing cautious purchasing strategies.

Domestic substitution continues to expand

China is also becoming less dependent on imported lumber for some common applications.

Processing of domestically grown plantation species such as cypress, poplar and eucalyptus has increased, allowing local material to replace part of the imported lumber previously used in standard construction applications.

Domestic wood panels, modified wood and engineered wood products are also increasingly replacing solid wood in furniture and interior-decoration applications.

This substitution is concentrated mainly in common construction products and medium- and lower-grade material. China continues to depend on imports for higher-value hardwood lumber and specific softwood lumber grades and dimensions.

Russia loses share as Viet Nam surges

Russia remained China’s largest lumber supplier in the first half of 2026, but its position continued to weaken.

China imported 4.464 million m³ of lumber from Russia, down 22% year on year. Russia accounted for approximately 42% of total Chinese lumber imports, compared with 47% in the same period of 2025.

Thailand remained the second-largest supplier with 2.096 million m³, although shipments declined 5%.

The most striking increase was recorded by Viet Nam. China’s lumber imports from Viet Nam surged 188% to 344,000 m³, while the value of shipments increased 301% to US$234 million.

Imports from Canada, the Philippines, Gabon and Myanmar also increased, while shipments from Russia, Thailand, Belarus, the US and Finland declined.

Main lumber suppliers to China by volume, H1 2026

<table style="width: 100%;
