Attempts by mills to secure substantial price reductions for the second half of 2026 have so far produced only limited results, as reduced harvesting and relatively tight log availability continue to support the market.

The situation highlights the increasingly difficult position facing the German sawmilling industry. Lumber demand remains subdued, particularly from construction, but mills have been unable to translate weaker finished-product markets into significantly lower raw-material costs.

Spruce remains particularly firm. Current prices for fixed-length spruce logs in the 2b+ B/BC assortment are reported at around €118-125/m³, while beetle-damaged spruce generally carries a discount of approximately €20/m³.

Pine prices are lower but have also remained relatively resilient. With lumber sales still difficult and German construction showing little evidence of a meaningful recovery, mills had expected greater downward pressure on log prices.

That pressure has largely failed to materialise. One reason is simply that the market is not receiving enough additional timber to create significant oversupply. Seasonal factors combined with recent periods of hot weather have reduced harvesting activity, while sawlog inventories have consequently declined.

Summer maintenance shutdowns and holiday-related production reductions at sawmills have provided some relief, but have not fundamentally changed the balance.

Demand for sawlogs therefore remains present even as demand for lumber remains considerably weaker.

A difficult equation for sawmills

The result is an increasingly uncomfortable disconnect between the two sides of the market.

German sawmills continue to face difficult lumber sales, particularly in products exposed to residential construction. Normally, these conditions would translate into weaker sawlog prices as mills reduce production and purchasing.

Instead, limited raw-material availability is providing a floor beneath log prices.

Regional market reports underline how resilient the market has remained. In parts of Bavaria, spruce 2b+ was still reported at approximately €118-120/m³ for July and August, while other regional reports showed levels of around €120-123/m³. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Regional purchasing conditions nevertheless vary considerably.

Sawmills in some parts of Germany have become more cautious and negotiations have become harder, while demand in other regions remains comparatively stable. This divergence suggests that mills are increasingly adjusting purchasing strategies to their individual lumber order books, log inventories and production requirements rather than following a uniform national trend.

Construction remains the major weakness

The biggest downside risk continues to come from Germany's construction sector.

The absence of a convincing recovery continues to restrict lumber consumption and, consequently, the amount of softwood logs sawmills can economically process.

This creates a market in which neither side has a particularly strong hand. Sawmills have limited ability to pay more for logs because lumber margins remain under pressure, while forest owners have little reason to accept substantially lower prices because the market is not experiencing a major surplus of roundwood.

For the moment, restricted supply appears to be winning that contest.

Industrial wood prices remain supported

Industrial wood is showing an even more resilient demand picture.

Prices have increased in some regions, supported by continued purchasing from industrial and energy users. Industrial hardwood is currently reported at approximately €70-80/m³, while industrial softwood is trading around €40-45/m³. Similar price levels are reported by regional forest-owner organisations for the third quarter. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Energy wood demand is also relatively stable as buyers begin building inventories ahead of the coming heating season.

An additional factor is reduced sawmill production. Lower lumber output also means fewer sawmill residues entering the market, which can increase demand for softwood industrial roundwood from pulp, panel and energy users.

The relationship is important: production curtailments intended to protect sawmill margins can indirectly strengthen competing demand for lower-grade roundwood.

Bark beetle supply remains a wildcard

The amount of beetle-damaged timber entering the market during the remainder of the year remains difficult to predict.

Extended periods of heat combined with persistent rainfall deficits can increase bark beetle risks. Forest owners are therefore attempting to identify affected trees quickly and remove them before infestations spread.

So far, however, regional forestry organisations have generally characterised 2026 as a relatively manageable beetle year.

If that continues, the market may avoid the large volumes of distressed spruce that in previous beetle outbreaks placed substantial downward pressure on prices.

That would leave sawmills facing a familiar problem heading into the autumn: weak lumber demand, but surprisingly expensive logs.

Unless harvesting volumes increase substantially or construction weakness forces deeper sawmill production cuts, Germany’s roundwood market could therefore remain considerably firmer than finished lumber conditions alone would suggest.

[5204

post-99638","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
