Swedish forest group S\u00f6dra is investing more than SEK 2 billion in a new lignin plant at its M\u00f6nster\u00e5s pulp mill, betting that a material traditionally burned for energy inside pulp mills can become a valuable industrial raw material for products ranging from adhesives and rubber to asphalt and potentially batteries.<\/p>\n
The plant is scheduled to start production in 2027 and will occupy almost 50,000 square metres, partly on newly developed land and partly within the existing M\u00f6nster\u00e5s industrial site. S\u00f6dra describes the project as one of the largest investments made at the mill since the 1990s and says the facility will be the world's largest of its kind.<\/p>\n
The investment is particularly significant because it does not depend on S\u00f6dra processing more wood. Instead, the company intends to extract more commercial value from material that is already part of its pulp production process, at a time when competition for forest raw material is increasing across Europe.<\/p>\n
M\u00f6nster\u00e5s currently produces around 750,000 tonnes of pulp per year. Once the new facility is operating, pulp will remain the mill's principal product, but part of the lignin currently used internally as an energy source will instead be recovered, processed into granules and sold to industrial customers.<\/p>\n
What is lignin?<\/strong><\/p>\n Lignin is one of the principal natural components of wood, alongside cellulose and hemicellulose. It is the substance that effectively binds the structure of a tree together, providing rigidity and mechanical strength. It is found not only in trees but also in bushes and other plants, and as much as roughly one-third of a tree can consist of lignin.<\/p>\n In simple terms, cellulose provides much of the fibrous structure that the pulp and paper industry wants to recover, while lignin is the natural binding material surrounding those fibres.<\/p>\n To manufacture pulp, the wood structure has to be broken down so that cellulose fibres can be separated. Lignin is therefore removed during the pulping process and ends up in the residual liquid known as black liquor.<\/p>\n For decades, this did not mean that lignin was simply discarded. Pulp mills have traditionally burned the lignin-rich black liquor in their recovery systems, recovering chemicals while generating heat and energy for the mill. At M\u00f6nster\u00e5s, this energy system is sufficiently important that the mill also supplies almost all district heating used by households in the municipality; according to S\u00f6dra, around 98% of local households receive heat generated from the mill.<\/p>\n The economic idea behind the new plant is to interrupt part of that cycle. Instead of using all available lignin as fuel, S\u00f6dra will separate a portion of it from the process, purify and process it into a granular material and sell it to other industries. A significant proportion will still remain within the existing energy system, meaning that the M\u00f6nster\u00e5s mill is not abandoning lignin as a fuel.<\/p>\n The change is essentially about moving lignin higher up the value chain: from an internally consumed energy source to a marketable industrial raw material.<\/p>\n From plywood adhesives to asphalt<\/strong><\/p>\n The attraction of lignin comes partly from its potential to replace materials currently derived from fossil resources.<\/p>\n S\u00f6dra is examining several such markets. One is the rubber industry, where lignin could replace part of the fossil-based content used in products such as rubber strips. Another is asphalt, where trials are being conducted in Sweden to substitute lignin for part of the fossil-derived bitumen traditionally used as the binder in road construction.<\/p>\n Adhesives are another established application with direct relevance to the wood products industry. Lignin is already used in certain adhesive products, and at industrial scale the volumes involved could correspond to adhesive applications across very large quantities of plywood.<\/p>\n The longer-term possibility attracting particular attention is batteries.<\/p>\n Research groups and companies are studying whether lignin can be converted into porous hard carbon. This material can potentially be used in the anode of sodium-ion batteries, providing a bio-based alternative for part of the battery's material composition. If the technology reaches large-scale commercial use, lignin extracted from wood could therefore eventually enter value chains far removed from traditional pulp and paper markets.<\/p>\n S\u00f6dra itself will not necessarily manufacture those finished products. Its role is to produce and commercialise the lignin granulate, while customers and technology companies develop downstream applications.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are not really just building a factory here. We are also building an opportunity to transform several value chains with a product that is produced in Sweden,\u201d Viktor Odenbrink, responsible for S\u00f6dra's lignin programme at M\u00f6nster\u00e5s, said.<\/p>\n More revenue without consuming more wood<\/strong><\/p>\n The investment also points to the economics of the European forest industry. Traditionally, increasing production and revenue often meant processing larger volumes of timber. That model is becoming more difficult as competition for wood increases and environmental and regulatory restrictions affect the amount of forest available for commercial harvesting.<\/p>\n S\u00f6dra sees lignin as one way of decoupling part of its future growth from additional wood consumption.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a way for us to grow and create more value for the forest owner members in S\u00f6dra without having to use more forest raw materials,\u201d M\u00f6nster\u00e5s site manager Karin Derneg\u00e5rd said.<\/p>\n The principle is straightforward: the logs entering M\u00f6nster\u00e5s already contain cellulose, lignin and numerous other chemical components. If more of those components can be separated and sold into different markets, the economic value generated from each cubic metre of wood increases without requiring a corresponding increase in harvesting.<\/p>\n This is particularly relevant for S\u00f6dra because the cooperative represents more than 50,000 forest owners who collectively own approximately 2.7 million hectares of forest in southern Sweden.<\/p>\n Investment comes after sharp deterioration in S\u00f6dra's results<\/strong><\/p>\n The SEK 2 billion investment is also being made against a difficult financial background.<\/p>\n S\u00f6dra recorded net sales of SEK 28.3 billion in 2025 but reported an operating loss of SEK 1.29 billion. ![<\/a>Viktor Odenbrink, responsible for the lignin program at S\u00f6dra in M\u00f6nster\u00e5s, and site manager S\u00f6dra Cell in M\u00f6nster\u00e5s, Karin Derneg\u00e5rd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe principle is straightforward: the logs entering M\u00f6nster\u00e5s already contain cellulose, lignin and numerous other chemical components. If more of those components can be separated and sold into different markets, the economic value generated from each cubic metre of wood increases without requiring a corresponding increase in harvesting.<\/p>\nThis is particularly relevant for S\u00f6dra because the cooperative represents more than 50,000 forest owners who collectively own approximately 2.7 million hectares of forest in southern Sweden.<\/p>\nInvestment comes after sharp deterioration in S\u00f6dra's results<\/strong><\/p>\nThe SEK 2 billion investment is also being made against a difficult financial background.<\/p>\nS\u00f6dra recorded net sales of SEK 28.3 billion in 2025 but reported an operating loss of SEK 1.29 billion. The group's operating result deteriorated by approximately SEK 3.4 billion compared with 2024, moving from a billion-kronor profit to a billion-kronor loss.<\/p>\nThat makes the commercial development of new products particularly important. Lignin is part of a broader strategy under which S\u00f6dra is trying to obtain more products from its existing industrial processes rather than relying solely on conventional pulp production.<\/p>\nM\u00f6nster\u00e5s already produces biomethanol, which can be used as a fuel in road and maritime transport. S\u00f6dra is also preparing to begin tannin production at its V\u00e4r\u00f6 mill, targeting applications including the leather and animal-feed industries.<\/p>\nThe result is a gradual transformation of the traditional pulp mill into a broader biorefinery, where several commercially useful materials can emerge from the same wood raw material.<\/p>\nTechnology developed over two decades<\/strong><\/p>\nThe concept behind the M\u00f6nster\u00e5s plant is not new. More than 20 years ago, researcher Per Tomani and three colleagues at the Swedish National Research Institute developed a method for extracting lignin from pulp mill black liquor. Their process made it possible to obtain purified lignin rather than simply consuming it within the mill's energy cycle, and the technology was subsequently patented.<\/p>\nWhat has changed is the potential market. Efforts to reduce dependence on fossil raw materials have created interest in bio-based alternatives across construction materials, chemicals, transport and energy storage. A substance that pulp producers once primarily valued for its energy content can therefore potentially command greater value if sold as an industrial feedstock.<\/p>\nS\u00f6dra will nevertheless have to demonstrate that these applications can absorb lignin at the volumes expected from a large industrial facility.<\/p>\nThere are already important customers. UPM and Stora Enso have signed agreements to purchase lignin granules from the M\u00f6nster\u00e5s plant once production begins.<\/p>\nFor S\u00f6dra, the significance of the project therefore extends beyond a single SEK 2 billion factory.
