Despite the small monthly decline, the price remained 8.7%, or €8.40/m³, above July 2025. Compared with April, pine sawlogs were still marginally higher, by 0.2%, indicating that prices have largely stabilised around the current level following the increases seen earlier in 2026.

Spruce sawlogs showed an almost identical monthly development. The average price slipped 0.2% to €109.06/m³, but remained 8.0%, or €8.10/m³, above the level recorded a year earlier. Spruce therefore continued to command a premium over pine, with the July spread between the two main softwood sawlog assortments at around €4.50/m³.

The monthly stability in standard sawlogs contrasts with somewhat firmer pricing for smaller-diameter material. Pine small-diameter logs increased 1.8% from June to €88.90/m³, while spruce small-diameter logs rose 1.3% to €95.15/m³.

The annual comparison was mixed for these assortments. Pine small-diameter logs were 0.5%, or around €0.50/m³, below July 2025, making them the only softwood log assortment in the survey to remain slightly below the previous year's level. Spruce small-diameter logs were 1.8%, or €1.70/m³, higher year on year.

The gap between standard and small-diameter assortments remained significant. Pine standard sawlogs traded almost €16/m³ above small-diameter pine, while the corresponding difference for spruce was close to €14/m³.

Birch prices rise sharply

The strongest movement among sawlog assortments in July came from birch. Birch sawlogs rose 11.8% from June to €106.62/m³, bringing the average price slightly above pine sawlogs and close to the level of spruce.

Compared with July 2025, birch sawlogs were 11.3%, or €10.90/m³, higher. The annual increase was therefore stronger than for both pine and spruce standard sawlogs.

Birch veneer logs also moved higher, rising 6.6% month on month to €160.91/m³. They remained by far the highest-priced assortment covered by the survey and were 8.9%, or €13.10/m³, above their level from a year earlier.

Small-diameter birch logs increased 9.8% in July to €75/m³ and were 7.1%, or €5/m³, above July 2025. Compared with three months earlier, the development of the main birch quality assortments was broadly similar to the strong monthly trend recorded in July.

The picture was weaker for the other hardwood sawlogs. Black alder rose sharply during July, gaining 11.9% to €62.58/m³, but the price remained 10.2%, or €7.10/m³, below the level recorded a year earlier.

Aspen sawlogs were unchanged from June at €58.87/m³. On an annual basis, prices were down 24.7%, or €19.30/m³, the largest year-on-year decline among the sawlog assortments included in the review.

Grey alder sawlogs were also unchanged month on month at €47.67/m³ and remained 12%, or €6.50/m³, below July 2025.

Pulpwood prices also move higher

Pulpwood prices rose across all major species in July, with monthly increases considerably larger than those recorded for standard pine and spruce sawlogs.

Pine and spruce pulpwood each increased 11% month on month to €65.79/m³. Birch pulpwood rose 10.3% to €64.94/m³, while aspen pulpwood gained 11.8% to €50.52/m³.

The July increase pushed softwood pulpwood above €65/m³, while birch approached the same level. According to the market review, comparable pulpwood prices were last seen around the beginning of autumn 2024.

The increases are even more pronounced over a three-month period. Spruce pulpwood was 24.1% higher than in April, pine 23.8% higher, birch 20.7% higher and aspen 12.8% higher.

Assortment

July 2026
€/m³

MoM

YoY

Pine sawlog

104.58

-0.2%

+8.7%

Spruce sawlog

109.06

-0.2%

+8.0%

Pine small-diameter log

88.90

+1.8%

-0.5%

Spruce small-diameter log

95.15

+1.3%

+1.8%

Birch veneer log

160.91

+6.6%

+8.9%

Birch sawlog

106.62

+11.8%

+11.3%

Birch small-diameter log

75.00

+9.8%

+7.1%

Aspen sawlog

58.87

0.0%

-24.7%

Black alder sawlog

62.58

+11.9%

-10.2%

Grey alder sawlog

47.67

0.0%

-12.0%

Estonian pine and spruce sawlog prices were largely stable in July after the increases recorded earlier in the year, but both assortments remained clearly above year-earlier levels.
