Japan's softwood lumber imports recovered sharply in June compared with the previous month, led by a 38% increase in shipments from the European Union. The monthly improvement nevertheless remained insufficient to offset the weakness seen earlier in the year, with total imports still 12% below June 2025 and cumulative first-half volumes down 13%.<\/p>\n

Total softwood lumber imports reached 310,000 m\u00b3<\/strong> in June, up 16%<\/strong> from May but 12%<\/strong> below the same month last year. During the first six months of 2026, imports totalled approximately 1.641 million m\u00b3<\/strong>, compared with around 1.89 million m\u00b3 in the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n

European suppliers accounted for most of the monthly recovery. EU shipments increased by 38%<\/strong> from May to 181,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, representing approximately 58% of Japan's total softwood lumber imports during the month. Canadian deliveries rose by 29%<\/strong>, while Russian shipments fell sharply.<\/p>\n

European shipments drive the June recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n

The EU strengthened its position as Japan's largest supplier of imported softwood lumber in June. Shipments reached 181,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, an increase of 38%<\/strong> from the relatively weak level recorded in May.<\/p>\n

European lumber accounted for approximately 58%<\/strong> of total Japanese imports during the month, up from just under half in May. EU shipments were more than two and a half times the Canadian volume and almost six times the amount imported from Russia.<\/p>\n

The sharp monthly increase did not, however, represent a return to the levels recorded last year. EU deliveries remained 10%<\/strong> below June 2025. Cumulative imports from the region reached approximately 929,000 m\u00b3<\/strong> during the first six months, also around 10%<\/strong> lower year-on-year.<\/p>\n

Japanese buyers returned to the European market in June after limiting purchases during the previous month. Competitive European prices appear to have supported the recovery, with EU lumber entering Japan at a considerably lower average unit value than Canadian material.<\/p>\n

Europe increases its share of a smaller Japanese market<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although Japan imported less softwood lumber during the first half of 2026, European suppliers continued to account for well over half of total arrivals. The EU supplied approximately 57%<\/strong> of Japan's imports between January and June, compared with about 20% for Canada and 14% for Russia.<\/p>\n

European shipments have therefore declined broadly in line with the Japanese market rather than losing significant ground to competing supply regions. Canada's cumulative exports fell by an estimated 14%<\/strong>, while Russian shipments were down approximately 24%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The stronger European performance in June was partly supported by price. The average import price of EU lumber fell by 5%<\/strong> from May to JPY 53,910\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac296\/m\u00b3)<\/strong>. This was around 10%<\/strong> below the average price for all imported lumber and approximately 16%<\/strong> below the Canadian price.<\/p>\n

For European sawmills facing subdued construction demand in several domestic markets, Japan remains an important premium destination, particularly for Nordic structural lumber. However, the first-half decline shows that Japanese demand has not been strong enough to absorb additional European production at the levels recorded in recent years.<\/p>\n

Canadian shipments recover but remain below last year<\/strong><\/p>\n

Canada shipped 71,000 m\u00b3<\/strong> of softwood lumber to Japan in June, an increase of 29%<\/strong> from May. The monthly recovery was the second strongest among Japan's major supply regions, behind the EU.<\/p>\n

Shipments nevertheless remained 8%<\/strong> below June 2025. During the first half of the year, Canadian exports totalled approximately 322,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, down an estimated 14%<\/strong> from the same period last year.<\/p>\n

Canada's average import price remained the highest among the principal suppliers covered by the Forestry Agency. Canadian lumber averaged JPY 63,954\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac351\/m\u00b3)<\/strong>, down 1% from May and 2% below the level recorded a year earlier.<\/p>\n

The price was approximately JPY 10,000\/m\u00b3<\/strong>, or \u20ac55\/m\u00b3<\/strong>, above the EU average. While product specifications and market segments differ, the gap gives European suppliers a clear price advantage in parts of the Japanese structural lumber market.<\/p>\n

Russian exports fall sharply in June<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russian softwood lumber shipments moved in the opposite direction. Imports fell by 32%<\/strong> from May to 32,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, the lowest volume among Japan's three principal foreign supply regions.<\/p>\n

The June volume was also 27%<\/strong> below the same month last year. During January-June, Russian exports reached approximately 231,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, representing an estimated annual decline of 24%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Russia's share of Japan's softwood lumber imports fell to around 10%<\/strong> in June, compared with 17% in May. The decline reduced Russia's role in the monthly supply mix and allowed European producers to expand their share considerably.<\/p>\n

The average import price of Russian lumber increased by 4%<\/strong> from May to JPY 58,617\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac322\/m\u00b3)<\/strong>. It was 3% higher than in June 2025 and remained above the average price of EU material.<\/p>\n

The average price of all imported softwood lumber declined by 2%<\/strong> from May to JPY 60,142\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac330\/m\u00b3)<\/strong>, but remained 1% above June 2025.<\/p>\n

European lumber recorded the largest monthly price decline, falling by 5%, while the Russian average increased by 4%. Despite the monthly reduction, the average EU import price was still 2% higher than a year earlier.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 annual price comparisons indicate show that the\u00a0contraction in Japanese imports has been driven mainly by lower purchasing volumes rather than a broad fall in lumber values. Importers appear to be buying cautiously and replenishing inventories only when required, while suppliers have largely avoided major price reductions.<\/p>\n

Glulam imports remain considerably below last year<\/strong><\/p>\n

Japan imported 51,000 m\u00b3<\/strong> of glulam in June, an increase of 4%<\/strong> from May but 19%<\/strong> below June 2025.<\/p>\n

The EU supplied 37,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, equivalent to approximately 73% of total arrivals. European shipments increased by 4% from May but remained 25%<\/strong> below the level recorded a year earlier.<\/p>\n

The decline was steeper than for total glulam imports, indicating some reduction in Europe's share compared with June 2025. No glulam shipments from Russia were recorded during the month.<\/p>\n

The average import price of structural glulam reached JPY 75,748\/m\u00b3 (\u20ac416\/m\u00b3)<\/strong>, up 1% from May and 13%<\/strong> year-on-year.<\/p>\n

Japanese import spending rises despite weaker lumber demand<\/strong><\/p>\n

The total value of Japan's wood imports reached JPY 774.1 billion<\/strong>, equivalent to approximately \u20ac4.25 billion<\/strong>, during the first half of 2026. This was 4% higher than in the same period last year and 9% above the first half of 2024.<\/p>\n

The increase in value contrasted with declining volumes in the main solid wood categories. Log imports fell by 9% year-on-year, softwood lumber by 13% and glulam by 1%. Plywood imports increased by 4%, while wood pellet volumes rose by 10%.<\/p>\n

Compared with the first half of 2024, Japan imported 8% fewer logs, 14% less lumber and 16% less glulam. The figures confirm that higher import expenditure is being supported by elevated prices and a changing product mix rather than stronger underlying demand for construction lumber.<\/p>\n

Japan's June figures offered European exporters some improvement after a weak May, but the market remained below last year's purchasing levels. The EU increased its share through a combination of higher monthly shipments and competitive prices, while Canada also recovered and Russia lost further ground. With first-half softwood lumber imports still down 13%, however, the June increase appears closer to inventory replenishment than the beginning of a sustained recovery.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
