The wildfire that swept across Gironde has left France's timber industry with a challenge that extends far beyond the emergency response. While firefighters continue to monitor isolated hotspots, forestry companies are preparing for one of the country's largest salvage logging operations in more than a decade. The objective is straightforward: recover as much timber as possible before biological degradation, insects and prolonged exposure reduce its industrial value.<\/p>\n
Recent estimates indicate that between 6 and 7 million m\u00b3 of fire-damaged maritime pine\u2014equivalent to roughly 4 to 5 million tonnes\u2014will have to be recovered from the approximately 42,000 hectares affected by the wildfire. According to Fran\u00e7ois Guiraud, president of the Maritime Pine Interprofession (CIPM), the volume is close to one year's raw material consumption for the regional wood-processing industry, illustrating the scale of the salvage operation now underway.<\/p>\n
The operation arrives at a critical moment for Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France's largest forestry region. The region supplies more than a quarter of the country's harvested timber each year and produces almost 90% of France's maritime pine, making it one of Europe's most important softwood-producing areas. According to regional figures, the forest, wood and paper industries generate more than \u20ac10 billion in annual turnover and support approximately 60,000 jobs, meaning the consequences of the wildfire will extend well beyond forest owners.<\/p>\n
Unlike conventional harvesting, however, speed has become almost as important as volume. Fire-damaged timber follows a different commercial timeline. Every delay reduces the proportion of logs that can be directed towards higher-value products, while increasing the amount that ultimately ends up in pulp, panels or biomass.<\/p>\n
The market is now competing with biology<\/strong><\/p>\n The immediate priority is no longer extinguishing flames but preserving timber quality. Forestry crews are first removing unstable trees that threaten roads, power lines and nearby settlements before moving into large-scale salvage harvesting.<\/p>\n Gironde prefect Sophie Brocas has said that dangerous trees must be removed as a priority while timber should be extracted quickly enough to avoid creating new hazards. Her warning extends beyond public safety. Timber left standing after severe fire provides favourable conditions for secondary biological damage that can rapidly reduce its commercial value.<\/p>\n One of the principal concerns is the bark beetle. Fire-stressed maritime pine becomes particularly vulnerable because damaged trees lose part of their natural defence mechanisms. Once infestations become established, timber quality deteriorates rapidly and additional surrounding trees may also become susceptible.<\/p>\n Foresters are simultaneously watching developments in neighbouring Landes, where pine wood nematode was detected at the end of 2025. The microscopic pest itself is transmitted by longhorn beetles that are attracted to weakened pine. Although the bark beetle and the nematode represent different biological threats, together they increase pressure to remove damaged timber before secondary infestations expand. According to the European Food Safety Authority, the pine wood nematode remains one of the most serious quarantine pests affecting pine forests because of its capacity to kill susceptible trees once established.<\/p>\n For the timber industry, this changes the economics of salvage harvesting. The objective is not simply to maximise recovered volumes but to preserve the highest possible share of sawlog-quality material before biological processes begin reducing recovery rates.<\/p>\n That challenge also explains why processors are unlikely to view the sudden increase in timber availability as an opportunity to lower procurement costs. Large salvage programmes frequently produce substantial short-term supply while simultaneously increasing harvesting, storage and transport costs.<\/p>\n Fran\u00e7ois Guiraud has pointed out that France has successfully managed exceptional timber volumes before, particularly following Storm Klaus (2009) and Storm Xynthia (2010). Those events demonstrated the processing capacity of the regional industry, although they also placed considerable pressure on timber markets for an extended period.
