Less than a year after temporarily laying off around 100 employees, Norway's Moelven Byggmodul is preparing for its busiest period ever. A record order backlog has prompted the company to recruit 35 new employees and introduce double-shift production on both manufacturing lines simultaneously for the first time in its history.<\/p>\n
The expansion marks a sharp turnaround for the modular timber construction specialist, reflecting stronger demand across several market segments as industrialised wood construction continues to gain momentum in Norway.<\/p>\n
Record order backlog supports production expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n The additional employees will join the company's production facility in Moelv during September, increasing the workforce at the factory and headquarters to approximately 360 employees.<\/p>\n According to Managing Director Trond Skjellerud, the company has almost doubled its order backlog over the past few months, creating the need for additional production capacity.<\/p>\n The higher workload will allow Moelven Byggmodul to operate two shifts simultaneously on both production lines for the first time since the factory opened, a milestone that the company views as evidence of growing confidence in prefabricated timber construction.<\/p>\n Skjellerud said demand for Norwegian-made modular timber buildings remains strong, with customers increasingly choosing factory-built solutions to shorten construction schedules and improve project efficiency.<\/p>\n Demand broadens across multiple sectors<\/strong><\/p>\n While Moelven Byggmodul has long supplied temporary accommodation modules for the construction industry, recent growth has been driven by a broader range of permanent building projects.<\/p>\n The company reports rising demand for modular solutions in:<\/p>\n -Schools and educational facilities Its Moelv factory currently manufactures more than 70 fully fitted timber modules each week, with interiors, electrical systems and technical installations completed before delivery to construction sites.<\/p>\n Major education and commercial projects underway<\/strong><\/p>\n Several large public-sector projects have recently left the production line.<\/p>\n Before the summer break, Moelven completed modular buildings for a new upper secondary school in eastern Norway and a kindergarten in \u00d8stfold, both scheduled to open before the new academic year.<\/p>\n Production will soon begin on 60 timber modules for a new primary school in western Norway.<\/p>\n The company has also secured the contract to deliver a new office building for defence manufacturer Nammo at Raufoss. The 2,500-square-metre building will be constructed using 89 prefabricated modules, with completion planned before the end of the year.<\/p>\n Recovery follows challenging 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n The rapid increase in activity comes less than a year after Moelven Byggmodul temporarily laid off approximately 100 employees during a slowdown in the construction market.<\/p>\n The current expansion therefore represents a significant recovery for the business, although management says it remains cautious despite the positive market outlook.<\/p>\n This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Moelv factory, which began operations in 1976.
