While residential construction continues to face pressure from high borrowing costs and affordability challenges, the company reported better pricing, stronger mill performance and improving demand across several product categories.

Second-quarter sales rose to US$1.43 billion, up from US$1.33 billion in the first quarter, while the net loss narrowed to US$61 million from US$188 million. Adjusted EBITDA improved to US$59 million, compared with a negative US$66 million three months earlier. The lumber division generated US$41 million in adjusted EBITDA, benefiting from stronger lumber markets and a favourable adjustment to softwood lumber duties, while both the North American and European engineered wood products businesses contributed US$13 million each. Results from other operating segments remained negative, largely due to scheduled maintenance at the Cariboo pulp facility.

Lumber operations continue to recover

Operational performance also strengthened during the quarter as West Fraser continued improving productivity across its manufacturing network.

Production at the company's modernized Henderson sawmill in Texas more than doubled compared with the previous quarter and has now reached output levels comparable with the facility it replaced. Southern Yellow Pine production remained broadly in line with last year despite the closure of the Augusta sawmill in late 2025, while Canadian lumber production increased 13% after the Blue Ridge mill returned to normal operating rates.

The company also completed the wind-down of its High Level OSB mill in Alberta, describing the move as part of a broader strategy to concentrate production at its newest and most efficient facilities while continuing to improve overall manufacturing performance.

Housing market remains the key uncertainty

West Fraser continues to see residential construction as the main driver of demand for lumber, OSB and engineered wood products.

Management said long-term fundamentals remain supportive, citing the structural shortage of housing in the United States, the ageing housing stock that continues to generate repair and renovation activity, and the growing use of mass timber in commercial construction. However, elevated mortgage rates, affordability constraints and weaker consumer confidence are expected to continue weighing on new home construction over the near term.

Reflecting that outlook, the company maintained its 2026 shipment guidance of 2.4–2.7 billion board feet for lumber and 5.9–6.3 billion square feet for North American OSB, indicating that current market conditions remain broadly consistent with expectations despite ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty.

Europe remains on a gradual recovery path

West Fraser expects demand across Europe and the United Kingdom to continue improving during the remainder of the year.

The company forecasts stable to modestly higher demand for MDF, particleboard and OSB, supported by increasing timber-frame construction, greater use of OSB as an alternative to plywood and continuing repair and renovation activity across the region. Although geopolitical tensions and inflationary pressures remain risks, management reiterated its European OSB shipment target of 1.0–1.25 billion square feet for 2026, signalling confidence that current market conditions will continue.

Rising manufacturing costs remain a challenge

Cost inflation continued to affect operations during the quarter.

Higher oil prices increased resin and wax costs by approximately US$13 million compared with the first quarter, while transportation expenses also rose, particularly in the U.S. South, because of higher fuel prices and tighter labour availability. West Fraser said much of these additional costs have been recovered through customer surcharges, although geopolitical developments continue to create uncertainty for input costs. The company estimates that every US$10 per barrel movement in crude oil prices changes annual resin and wax costs by approximately US$15 million.

Limited impact from new U.S. tariffs

West Fraser also addressed recently announced U.S. trade measures.

According to the company, the new Section 338 tariffs are not expected to affect its Canadian shipments of softwood lumber or OSB into the United States. Only a relatively small portion of plywood and laminated veneer lumber exports could be exposed to the new measures, although the company said it continues to assess potential indirect effects across downstream supply chains. Existing Section 232 tariffs and Canadian softwood lumber duties remain in place.

Outlook

While near-term demand remains constrained by affordability pressures, inflation and trade uncertainty, West Fraser believes underlying market fundamentals remain supportive. Continued operational improvements, disciplined cost management and investments in modern production facilities are expected to strengthen the company's competitive position as residential construction gradually recovers.

West Fraser delivered a stronger second quarter as improving market conditions across its core wood products businesses helped significantly reduce losses and return every major operating segment to positive adjusted EBITDA.
