Poland's sawmilling sector is showing clear signs of financial strain, with overdue payments now running well into the hundreds of millions of zloty and industry groups warning that a further squeeze on domestic timber supply could tip an already stressed sector into a wave of insolvencies.<\/p>\n
The debt picture<\/strong><\/p>\n Sawmills in Poland currently carry more than 249.7 million zloty (\u20ac57.8 million) in overdue, past-due obligations, according to figures from credit bureau BIG InfoMonitor. That sits alongside 159 million zloty (\u20ac36.8 million) owed by joinery firms and a further 386 million zloty (\u20ac89.3 million) owed by furniture manufacturers -- up 15.1% (an extra 50.6 million zloty, or \u20ac11.7 million) in just twelve months. Looked at together, the numbers point to a problem that runs the length of the wood-processing chain rather than sitting in any single part of it.<\/p>\n That structure is exactly what makes the debt dangerous. Timber production in Poland runs through a long chain -- sawmills, joinery workshops, component manufacturers, hauliers and subcontractors -- and in a chain that long, one unpaid invoice further downstream can trigger a run of delayed payments back up the line. A sawmill that isn't paid on time by a furniture manufacturer starts delaying its own payments to log suppliers and hauliers, and the problem spreads outward from there. Higher prices for the raw material leave companies with three unattractive choices: raise prices on their own output, absorb the cost through thinner margins, or cut expenses elsewhere in the business. Every one of those options risks eroding competitiveness, especially in export markets, right as foreign demand for Polish wood products is already softening.<\/p>\n Jobs and industry pushback<\/strong><\/p>\n The Polish Timber Union -- whose members purchase around 12 million cubic metres of wood annually and whose activities account for roughly 5% of Poland's GDP -- has appealed directly to the president and prime minister to halt the policy changes. The union's warning is direct: the changes could cost state forest enterprises upwards of 200 million zloty (\u20ac46.3 million) a year in lost revenue and drag the wider industry into its most severe crisis in decades.<\/p>\n The employment numbers attached to this dispute are substantial.
