The company also confirmed that its strategic review of the Central European sawmills and building solutions business remains in progress, while wood availability across the Nordic region continues to be tight.

The deterioration in the wood-related segment reflected two separate developments. Stora Enso received lower prices for wood sold externally in Sweden after storm-damaged timber increased supply in the regional market. This placed downward pressure on external wood prices and reduced the revenue Stora Enso earned from selling wood from its forest-related activities.

The effect on Central European sawmills was different. Here, Stora Enso explicitly referred to lower wood products margins. The company did not provide a detailed breakdown showing whether the decline resulted from softwood lumber prices, product mix, utilisation rates, logistics, production costs or other factors.

Wood products and wood deliveries increase

The decline in earnings was not accompanied by a contraction in reported deliveries. Higher deliveries were not enough to compensate for weaker prices in external Swedish wood sales and lower margins in Central European wood products.

Strategic review of Central European sawmills remains ongoing

Stora Enso confirmed that its strategic review of the Central European sawmills and building solutions operations continues. The half-year report did not provide a timetable for completion or identify a preferred outcome.

The review comes as the business is generating weak returns. With the adjusted EBIT margin of the wider Other segment down to 1.1%, the latest results increase attention on whether Stora Enso will retain, restructure or divest parts of the Central European wood products portfolio.

No sawmill sale, closure or restructuring measure was announced in the second-quarter report.

Wood availability remains tight

Stora Enso CEO Hans Sohlström said wood costs had declined compared with the exceptionally high levels recorded in recent years. However, he added that wood availability remained tight and that total wood costs, including sawlog costs, were still high.

“Compared to the exceptionally high levels seen over the past years, wood costs have moderated. However, wood supply continues to be tight and overall wood costs, including sawlogs, remain high.”

These comments describe the group’s wider procurement environment and do not conflict with the fall in external wood prices in storm-affected parts of Sweden. Stora Enso buys and sells different wood assortments across several geographic markets, under contracts with different delivery, transport and timing conditions.

A temporary increase in storm-damaged timber can depress regional spot prices, while average procurement costs across the company’s industrial system remain high.

Market conditions remain uncertain

Stora Enso said demand remained subdued in several end markets during the second quarter, while geopolitical tensions increased uncertainty. According to the company, the conflict in Iran contributed to higher energy, logistics and other input costs.

For the third quarter, planned maintenance is expected to have an additional negative impact of approximately EUR 40–50 million compared with the second quarter. Scheduled shutdowns are planned across all operational segments.

For the wood products business, the central problem remains profitability rather than deliveries. Stora Enso shipped more wood products during the quarter, but margins in Central Europe declined and earnings from external Swedish wood sales were hit by lower realised prices.

The continuing review of the Central European sawmills will therefore remain one of the main issues to watch. The second-quarter figures show that the present wood products structure is contributing little to group earnings even as shipment volumes remain relatively stable.

Stora Enso reported a steep decline in earnings from its wood-related operations in the second quarter of 2026, despite higher deliveries of wood products and roundwood.
