Pfeifer's Kajaani plant looks different than it did two years ago. The mill has been rebuilt around a fully automated production line \u2014 logs move through cutting, sorting and drying with no forklift traffic at any stage \u2014 as part of a wider push by the Austrian group into Nordic softwood lumber following its 2023 acquisition of Finnish processor P\u00f6lkky.<\/p>\n

Pfeifer Group has more than doubled softwood lumber capacity at its Kajaani mill in Finland, pushing annual output to roughly 450,000 cubic metres and turning what was already a working sawmill into one of the most automated production sites in Northern Europe.<\/p>\n

The upgrade traces back to Pfeifer's purchase of Finnish processor P\u00f6lkky in early 2023, the deal that opened the Austrian group's push beyond Central Europe and into the Nordic softwood belt. Kajaani quickly became the flagship of that expansion. Inside a matter of months, the Austrian producer rebuilt the site around a new saw hall, framed using its own glulam and cross-laminated panels, alongside modernised offices and staff facilities, and renegotiated shift patterns directly with the workforce.<\/p>\n

Why Finland, and why now<\/strong><\/p>\n

The logic behind the Finnish push is straightforward: secure reliable, high-quality Nordic log supply while gaining a foothold in new export markets. At Kajaani, pine dominates the log intake, making up around 70% of what the mill processes, with spruce covering the rest. Most of that pine comes from Finnish forestry operations, though close to a third of Pfeifer's log supply is bought directly as standing timber in the forest \u2014 a sourcing mix the company says keeps its product range and output flexible.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Pfeifer Nordics chief executive Alexander Kainer (in the photo below) has pointed to testing showing northern Finnish pine performs comparably to the Central European spruce the group has traditionally relied on \u2014 a technical detail that matters given how much of Pfeifer's existing customer base is built around spruce-grade softwood lumber.<\/p>\n

The five Finnish production sites Pfeifer now controls \u2014 Kajaani, Kuusamo, Taivalkoski, Kitka and Oulu \u2014 have been consolidated under a single operating entity, Pfeifer Nordics Oy, while export sales continue to run through Pfeifer Timber GmbH, the group's long-established international sales arm.<\/p>\n

No forklifts, no bottlenecks<\/strong><\/p>\n

What sets the rebuilt Kajaani line apart is how little human handling happens between log intake and finished, kiln-dried lumber packages. The entire internal transport chain is automated, with no forklift movement anywhere in the process \u2014 log sorting and several core systems were supplied by Finnish equipment specialists. At the centre of the mill sits a high-speed saw line built specifically for the smaller-diameter pine logs typical of the region, running at up to 170 metres a minute.<\/p>\n

Automation carries through the wet-sorting, kiln-drying and final dry-sorting stages too, backed by large buffer stores that keep the line running without interruption. Pfeifer says a log now moves from the point of cutting to a finished, ready-to-ship softwood lumber package in under a week, with only a small processing workforce needed to keep the operation moving.<\/p>\n

Beyond the headline output figure, the site is being pushed to use everything it produces: bark generated in the process feeds an on-site energy operation, and construction is underway on a 17-megawatt heating unit due to start up in summer 2026.<\/p>\n

More capacity still on the table<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even after more than doubling throughput, Pfeifer isn't treating Kajaani as finished. Executives have floated adding in-house planing capacity, which would let the mill capture more value from the same log volume rather than shipping rough-sawn product for finishing elsewhere. There's also a logistics angle: a disused rail spur near the site could, if reactivated, shift a meaningful share of outbound softwood lumber from truck to rail, cutting road traffic around the mill.<\/p>\n

Across the whole Nordic operation, Pfeifer now has capacity to produce roughly 1 million cubic metres of softwood lumber a year, alongside 200,000 cubic metres of planed timber, 30,000 cubic metres of glulam and 50,000 cubic metres of pressure-treated wood. That output feeds customers in Finland, the UK, the US, Japan and the MENA region \u2014 a spread that underlines why Pfeifer views its Finnish sites not just as a raw-material play, but as a genuine expansion of its international footprint in softwood lumber.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
