While the immediate focus has been on energy markets, the implications extend well beyond oil. For the global wood products industry, a prolonged disruption at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—combined with the continuing restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz—would create one of the most severe logistical shocks since the pandemic.

Although it remains unclear how the Houthis would enforce such a blockade or whether commercial shipping will again become a direct target, shipping companies are already evaluating the risks. During the previous Red Sea crisis, many carriers abandoned the Suez route altogether, rerouting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope. Any return to that scenario would once again reshape global timber supply chains.

A double choke point for global shipping

The current situation is fundamentally different from the Red Sea crisis of 2024.

At that time, the Strait of Hormuz remained open, allowing Gulf exporters to continue supplying world markets even as shipping through the Red Sea became increasingly dangerous.

Today, however, Hormuz has already been heavily disrupted by the regional conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Saudi Arabia redirected much of its crude exports through its Red Sea terminal at Yanbu, making Bab el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal the primary alternative route.

If Red Sea traffic is also interrupted, two of the Middle East's most important maritime gateways would effectively become unavailable at the same time.

For shipping companies, this means there would be no efficient alternative. Cargoes destined for Europe would largely be forced around southern Africa, extending voyages by roughly 10 to 15 days depending on origin and destination, while increasing bunker fuel consumption, insurance premiums and vessel operating costs.

Why the wood industry should pay attention

Unlike energy markets, wood products are generally not considered strategic cargoes. That makes them particularly vulnerable when shipping capacity becomes scarce.

Container lines typically prioritize higher-value goods when vessels and equipment are limited. During previous Red Sea disruptions, timber exporters frequently reported delayed bookings, longer transit times and rising freight rates as carriers allocated available capacity elsewhere.

If the latest tensions develop into sustained disruptions, several segments of the forest products industry could be affected simultaneously.

European imports from Asia

Europe imports significant volumes of plywood, hardwood panels, furniture components, flooring, mouldings and engineered wood products from China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

Much of this cargo normally reaches Europe through the Suez Canal.

Diversions around Africa would increase freight costs while lengthening delivery schedules, forcing importers to carry larger inventories and reducing supply chain flexibility.

European exports to Asia

European producers ship substantial volumes of softwood lumber, hardwood lumber, wood panels, wood pellets and paper products to Asian markets.

Longer shipping routes reduce vessel availability and increase freight costs, potentially making European products less competitive compared with suppliers located closer to Asian consumers.

Northern European sawmills that rely heavily on Asian demand could see export margins come under pressure if freight costs continue rising.

Freight costs could rise again

During the previous Houthi attacks in 2024, container freight rates between Asia and Europe surged as ships abandoned the Red Sea. Although rates later eased, they never fully returned to pre-crisis levels. A renewed disruption—especially one occurring alongside continuing instability around Hormuz—could tighten global vessel availability once again.

Freight and logistics

Energy-related impacts

Higher container freight rates

Increased marine insurance costs

Longer delivery times

Reduced schedule reliability

Greater pressure on inventory planning

Higher logistics costs throughout the supply chain

Higher harvesting costs

More expensive log transportation

Higher sawmill operating costs

Increased kiln drying expenses

Higher trucking and rail costs

More expensive ocean freight

Bulk carriers transporting lumber, logs, wood chips and pellets would also face higher voyage expenses due to the additional sailing distance around Africa.

Rising energy costs would add another layer of pressure

Even companies whose cargo avoids the Red Sea would not escape the consequences.

If both Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb remain constrained, analysts expect global oil prices to remain elevated or increase further.

Higher fuel prices directly affect virtually every stage of the forest products value chain.

Wood manufacturers have only recently emerged from the energy cost shocks experienced during 2022 and 2023. Another sustained increase would again squeeze already thin operating margins across many segments.

Supply chains have become more resilient—but not immune

The forest industry enters this latest geopolitical crisis in a stronger position than during the pandemic.

Many companies have diversified suppliers, increased inventory buffers and improved logistics planning after several years of repeated disruptions.

However, geography remains difficult to overcome.

Nearly all maritime trade between Europe and Asia still depends on either the Suez Canal or the much longer Cape of Good Hope route. There is no equivalent alternative capable of replacing the efficiency of the Red Sea corridor.

Market outlook

At this stage, much remains uncertain. The Houthis have announced the blockade, but it remains unclear whether they will actively target commercial shipping or whether carriers will once again withdraw from the Red Sea as a precaution.

For the global wood industry, however, the situation deserves close attention. If Hormuz remains constrained while Red Sea traffic deteriorates again, the industry could face another period of elevated freight costs, longer transit times and renewed supply chain volatility. Companies that rely heavily on Europe-Asia trade would likely be the first to feel the impact, but higher logistics and energy costs would eventually spread across nearly every segment of the global forest products market.

The latest announcement by Yemen’s Houthi movement that it intends to impose a maritime blockade targeting Saudi Arabia has revived concerns over one of the world’s most important shipping corridors.
