Sawmills maintain selective purchasing<\/strong><\/p>\n Softwood sawlog demand remains constrained by the slow pace of residential construction, which continues to limit sawn timber sales across much of Central Europe. Purchasing activity, however, differs considerably between regions as inventories vary from one mill to another.<\/p>\n Several sawmills in Upper Austria are actively seeking additional volumes, while deliveries into parts of Styria remain subject to quotas because of the continued inflow of salvage timber from damaged forest areas. In Lower Austria, pine has returned to the market after a period of limited demand, although producers are being advised to move harvested timber quickly to avoid blue stain damage during the summer heat.<\/p>\n Logistics have improved across most of the country, allowing forest roadside inventories to decline substantially. Depending on quality and region, standard Grade 2b and 3a spruce logs generally trade between \u20ac120 and \u20ac130 per cubic metre roadside, with premium markets in Lower Austria, Salzburg and Styria remaining close to the upper end of that range. Larch continues to be one of the strongest-performing assortments, supported by supply shortages that keep prices well above most other conifer species.<\/p>\n Industrial wood demand strengthens<\/strong><\/p>\n Unlike the sawlog market, industrial roundwood demand has continued to improve.<\/p>\n Lower sawmill production has reduced the availability of sawmill residues, encouraging pulp, paper and panel producers to source additional roundwood directly from forests. Although inventories at several processing facilities have increased modestly in recent weeks, mills generally remain open to new deliveries and available volumes are being collected without significant delays.<\/p>\n Softwood pulpwood prices are broadly stable nationwide, although Salzburg has recorded one of the strongest increases for softwood fibrewood during the latest reporting period. Beech fibrewood demand also remains balanced, with relatively limited supply preventing downward price pressure.<\/p>\n Typical roadside prices for spruce pulpwood range between \u20ac42.75 and \u20ac59.85 per cubic metre, depending on region, while deliveries sold on an atro-tonne basis commonly reach \u20ac90\u2013126 per atro tonne in the strongest markets.<\/p>\n Energy wood market returns to seasonal conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n The energy wood sector has also become more balanced after the easing of supply tensions in Upper Austria.<\/p>\n Market activity now reflects normal seasonal patterns, although several buyers have started securing additional volumes ahead of the next heating season. Combined with higher harvesting and handling costs linked to energy expenses, this has resulted in modest price increases in some regional markets.<\/p>\n Firewood prices remain relatively firm, with hardwood generally commanding higher values than softwood. Depending on region and quality, hardwood firewood currently trades between \u20ac105 and \u20ac130 per stacked cubic metre, while softwood firewood typically ranges from \u20ac70 to \u20ac110 per stacked cubic metre.<\/p>\n Bark beetle pressure increases<\/strong><\/p>\n Forestry organisations are warning that prolonged periods of hot weather combined with persistent rainfall deficits are creating favourable conditions for bark beetle development.<\/p>\n Forest owners are encouraged to inspect stands frequently, identify newly infested trees at an early stage and remove affected timber before insects can spread further.
