Yet beneath the weaker headline figures, plywood producers supplying the United States experienced a very different market, with importers accelerating purchases ahead of possible new tariffs.

According to industry data, timber export volumes fell 17% from April, while export revenues declined by 10%. The slowdown was concentrated in monthly shipments rather than prices, leaving export values marginally above those recorded in May 2025. Although the figures marked the weakest monthly performance since the beginning of the year, they do not suggest a broad deterioration in global demand as cumulative exports remain close to last year's levels.

Part of the slowdown reflects the industry's normal seasonal cycle. European buyers typically complete much of their procurement for pine plywood and sawn timber before the summer, leading to a softer trading period during late spring. That pattern was reinforced this year by the appreciation of the Brazilian real against the US dollar, which reduced the competitiveness of Brazilian exports at a time when European customers were already slowing purchases.

The international trading environment has also become less predictable. Exporters report that negotiations are increasingly influenced by trade policy rather than market fundamentals, with buyers favouring shorter contracts and delaying purchasing decisions until there is greater clarity over future tariff regimes and broader geopolitical developments.

The United States illustrates that shift particularly well

While shipments of many timber products weakened during May, Brazilian plywood exports to the US moved sharply higher as importers attempted to bring cargoes into the country before proposed additional tariffs could take effect. One major exporter reported that its plywood shipments to the United States have increased by more than 100% since January, describing the rise as precautionary buying rather than evidence of stronger underlying demand.

That distinction is likely to become increasingly important during the second half of the year. Importers are effectively advancing purchases that would otherwise have been spread over several months, reducing their exposure to possible tariff increases. Such buying patterns typically create a temporary spike in shipments before being followed by a period of weaker imports once inventories have been rebuilt.

For Brazilian producers, the immediate result has been fuller order books but considerably less visibility beyond the next few months. Negotiations have become more cautious, customers are committing to shorter purchasing programmes and investment decisions are increasingly influenced by policy developments in Washington rather than conditions in the US housing market.

The uncertainty is also accelerating a longer-term strategic shift already underway within Brazil's wood products industry. Producers that historically relied on North American demand are expanding their commercial presence in Europe, Mexico, Australia, Japan and selected African markets while investing in higher-value plywood and engineered wood products aimed at reducing dependence on a single export destination. The transition will take time, however, as many mills have spent decades adapting production to US specifications and alternative markets require different dimensions, certifications and product standards.

Brazil’s wood products exports lost momentum in May, ending several months of gradual recovery as seasonal buying patterns, exchange-rate movements and growing uncertainty over international trade combined to reduce shipments.
