While companies reported a modest improvement in current business conditions, expectations for the next six months deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"532\" data-end=\"814\">The assessment of the current business situation improved to <strong data-start=\"593\" data-end=\"609\">-24.4 points<\/strong>, compared with <strong data-start=\"625\" data-end=\"641\">-27.1 points<\/strong> a month earlier. However, the forward-looking outlook weakened to <strong data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"724\">-36.3 points<\/strong>, down from <strong data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"752\">-32.4 points<\/strong> in April, reflecting continued uncertainty across the sector.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"816\" data-end=\"1103\">Despite the recent stabilization, the wood industry continues to lag behind Germany's broader manufacturing sector. The ifo business climate indicator for manufacturing improved slightly to <strong data-start=\"1006\" data-end=\"1022\">-15.0 points<\/strong> in May, significantly above the <strong data-start=\"1055\" data-end=\"1071\">-30.4 points<\/strong> recorded for the wood industry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1524\">Market conditions remain uneven across industry segments. Timber construction continues to outperform other wood-processing industries, supported by stronger residential construction activity and a growing market share for prefabricated timber buildings. During the first quarter of 2026, building permits for one- and two-family homes increased by <strong data-start=\"1454\" data-end=\"1463\">14.9%<\/strong>, while approvals for multi-family housing rose by <strong data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1523\">15.2%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1942\">By contrast, the furniture industry continues to face difficult trading conditions, weighed down by weak consumer spending, lower housing completions and sharply higher energy and raw material costs following the outbreak of the Iran conflict.
