Sweden's timber harvest continued to decline in 2025, marking the fourth consecutive annual decrease since harvesting reached record levels in 2021.<\/p>\n

According to the latest Skogsdata<\/strong> report published by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), annual fellings have dropped by almost 10 million cubic metres<\/strong> over the past four years, reflecting weaker market conditions rather than a shortage of forest resources.<\/p>\n

The decline follows an exceptional period for the Swedish forest sector, when strong lumber demand, high sawlog prices and robust construction activity encouraged harvesting to record levels. As European construction slowed and sawmill profitability deteriorated, harvesting activity gradually returned to more typical levels.<\/p>\n

The report indicates that Sweden's forests continue to grow faster than they are being harvested, meaning the country's standing timber volume continues to increase despite lower annual fellings. Annual forest growth remains above 120 million cubic metres<\/strong>, well exceeding current harvesting levels.<\/p>\n

Lower harvesting is also consistent with the current situation facing Sweden's forest products industry. Several sawmills have reduced production or announced capacity closures during the past year as high log costs and subdued lumber demand compressed margins. With mills purchasing more cautiously, many forest owners have reduced harvesting activity rather than selling timber into a weaker market.<\/p>\n

The slowdown has not been uniform across the country. Southern Sweden continues to experience tighter sawlog markets because of its concentration of processing capacity, while northern regions remain comparatively better supplied with timber resources. Regional differences in procurement conditions therefore persist despite the nationwide decline in harvesting.<\/p>\n
