According to Statistics Norway, timber sales climbed from NOK 8 billion (€712 million) in 2024 to NOK 11 billion (€979 million) in 2025, while log prices reached their highest level since 1990.

The positive market conditions for forest owners, however, have not translated into stronger profitability for companies producing softwood lumber. Instead, sawmills across Norway are facing declining demand, squeezed margins and a prolonged slowdown in residential construction, forcing many businesses to scale back production and reduce costs.

The weakness has become increasingly visible during 2026. Industry figures showed that softwood lumber sales during the first quarter were significantly below the level recorded a year earlier, with the downturn continuing throughout April and May. Business confidence surveys conducted within Norway's construction sector also point to persistently weak market expectations.

Against this backdrop, Begna Bruk, one of Norway's established sawmills, has announced another round of restructuring measures. The sawmill plans to eliminate around nine full-time positions while suspending one of its two production shifts. Although some reductions may be achieved through natural staff turnover, redundancies are expected.

The decision comes despite substantial investment in the facility over recent years. Approximately NOK 120 million (€10.7 million) has been invested in modernising the mill, allowing the company to return to profit in 2024 after posting losses the previous year. Those investments underline the owners' confidence in the long-term future of the business, even as current market conditions deteriorate.

Management says the measures are driven entirely by market realities rather than operational shortcomings. According to managing director Halvor Thørud, Norway is experiencing one of the weakest periods for construction activity in recent years, with virtually the entire domestic sawmilling industry feeling the effects. Reducing production capacity is intended to protect the company's long-term viability and preserve as many jobs as possible.

For employees, however, the restructuring represents a difficult adjustment. Workforce reductions inevitably affect both those leaving the company and the colleagues who remain. Employee representatives acknowledge that the decisions are painful but recognise that many Norwegian sawmills are confronting the same market pressures.

As one of the principal industrial employers in the Valdres region, Begna Bruk plays an important role in the local economy. Like many Nordic softwood lumber producers, the company is attempting to balance short-term cost reductions with the need to remain competitive until demand from the construction sector begins to recover.

[5204

post-99248","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
