Global Wood Markets Info<\/strong> spoke with Raffaele Parlato<\/strong>, Vice President Sales Division at HASSLACHER group, about the outlook for Europe\u2019s structural timber market, covering demand trends, pricing, supply, exports and the prospects for mass timber construction.<\/p>\n

With four decades of experience in the timber industry, Raffaele Parlato<\/strong> has built a career spanning timber trading, international business development and global sales. Before joining HASSLACHER group, he developed his own timber import business in Italy and later led global sales and business development for a Scandinavian timber company. Today, he oversees Global Sales, the Project Division, Logistics and Customer Service at HASSLACHER group.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

GWMI:<\/strong> How would you describe the current market situation for structural finger-jointed solid timber, glulam and CLT in Europe? Which segments are performing better than expected, and which remain under pressure?<\/em><\/p>\n

Raffaele Parlato:<\/strong> Demand for structural finger-jointed solid timber (KVHolz) is normal for the season, with normal stock levels at both customers and suppliers. Prices are stabilising at a high level, although there is some pressure on pine KVHolz, particularly in Germany, where the peak prices are no longer being achieved. The expected further price increases are not materialising, as demand and supply are broadly balanced. Mass timber for projects continues to develop well, with strong demand in most countries, especially around the Mediterranean. Glulam for renovation projects and single-family housing, distributed through the timber trade, remains under pressure. Manufacturers are competing fiercely to maintain market share and secure capacity utilisation, passing lower raw material costs directly on to customers through lower selling prices.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GWMI:<\/strong> Are you seeing any signs of recovery in construction activity across Europe? Which countries or regions currently show the strongest demand?<\/em><\/p>\n

Raffaele Parlato:<\/strong> Central Europe and Scandinavia are showing no signs of recovery and continue to experience declining consumption. Poland is also seeing lower order intake from the German prefabricated housing market. By contrast, Southern and Eastern Europe are recording growing consumption, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balkans, while Italy is experiencing more modest growth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GWMI:<\/strong> How has customer behaviour changed over the past 12 months? Are buyers placing larger orders, rebuilding inventories, or continuing to purchase only for short-term needs?<\/em><\/p>\n

Raffaele Parlato:<\/strong> The market continues to be characterised by hand-to-mouth purchasing, with virtually no inventory speculation. Limited access to credit and uncertainty over future price developments are the main contributing factors. In the project business, virtually all tenders involve highly competitive bidding processes and multiple rounds of negotiation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GWMI:<\/strong> What is your outlook for timber demand in the second half of 2026 and in 2027? Do you expect a meaningful improvement in volumes?<\/em><\/p>\n

Raffaele Parlato:<\/strong> Unfortunately, not in the residential segments. Interest rates, housing affordability and generally weak economic conditions across the EU are unlikely to support building activity over the next 18 months. Growth is coming from new segments such as military infrastructure, data centres and logistics facilities, where mass timber is becoming increasingly attractive because of its sustainability, prefabrication and faster construction times.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GWMI:<\/strong> How would you describe the current balance between supply and demand for structural timber products? Are there any product categories where supply is becoming tighter?<\/em><\/p>\n

Raffaele Parlato:<\/strong> Supply is generally balanced with demand, or slightly exceeds it, across most product categories. Log availability has been good over the past six months. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop during the coming months, as the forest situation in regions such as central Germany, the Czech Republic and southern Sweden remains challenging.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GWMI:<\/strong> What are the main factors currently influencing timber prices in Europe? Do you expect prices for structural finger-jointed solid timber products to strengthen, remain stable or come under pressure in the coming months?<\/em><\/p>\n

Raffaele Parlato:<\/strong> Mainly stable. Some products have seen small corrections from the peak levels reached in May. Most producers are operating at either break-even or negative profitability and will do everything possible to align supply with demand in an effort to restore positive margins.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GWMI:<\/strong> Which export markets outside Europe are currently offering the best opportunities for European timber construction product manufacturers?<\/em><\/p>\n

Raffaele Parlato:<\/strong> Unfortunately, none. Consumption in China continues to decline. Japan is increasingly substituting imports with domestic species. The Middle East remains affected by ongoing conflicts, while North Africa cannot absorb the surplus material. In the United States, lumber prices remain below European levels as housing demand continues to be weak.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

GWMI:<\/strong> If you had to identify one major opportunity and one major risk for the European timber construction products industry over the next 12\u201324 months, what would they be?<\/em><\/p>\n

Raffaele Parlato:<\/strong> Timber construction continues to gain market share globally at the expense of traditional building methods, particularly in non-residential and multi-storey buildings. This is largely offsetting the decline in residential construction. On the risk side, log availability and geopolitical developments remain the biggest sources of uncertainty for the industry.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
