Finland's rapidly expanding pipeline of data centre projects is creating new opportunities for the country's timber industry, with developers and manufacturers promoting engineered wood as a way to accelerate construction while reducing carbon emissions.<\/p>\n
According to Antti Poikola, Executive Director of the Finnish Data Centre Association, Finland is currently one of Europe's most attractive destinations for data centre investment. Around 18 large-scale facilities are under construction, with at least another 18 projects in various stages of planning, supported by access to clean electricity, reliable infrastructure and comparatively fast grid connections.<\/p>\n
Poikola said one of Finland's main competitive advantages is the speed at which large projects can secure electricity connections. Grid access for major data centres can typically be obtained in less than three years, considerably faster than in many other European markets.<\/p>\n
\"Fast project delivery is one of the key factors influencing where data centre investments are located. If timber construction can shorten construction schedules while reducing climate impacts, it becomes a very attractive solution,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Timber construction gains attention<\/strong><\/p>\n The Finnish wood products sector sees the expansion of data centre construction as a significant opportunity for industrial timber building.<\/p>\n Mikko Leino, Head of Timber Construction at SRV, said construction speed has become a decisive competitive factor for data centre projects.<\/p>\n According to Leino, prefabricated timber elements allow structural frames to be assembled much faster than conventional building methods, while also providing the long spans and design flexibility required for technical facilities such as data centres.<\/p>\n He added that modern mass timber also offers predictable fire performance, with the outer char layer protecting the structural core and helping maintain load-bearing capacity during a fire.<\/p>\n Focus shifts beyond price<\/strong><\/p>\n Sauli Ylinen, Product and Development Manager at LapWall, said data centre developers increasingly evaluate suppliers on delivery reliability, construction speed and quality rather than price alone.<\/p>\n He believes the current investment cycle offers Finnish manufacturers an opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities on large-scale international projects.<\/p>\n Sini Koskinen, Senior Adviser at the Finnish Wood Products Industry Association, said the rapid growth of the data centre sector could help improve productivity across Finland's construction industry.<\/p>\n According to Koskinen, the opportunity will only be realised if companies develop common concepts, build reference projects and offer international investors scalable timber solutions.<\/p>\n With dozens of projects expected to move forward over the coming years, Finland's wood products sector hopes the country's data centre boom will become a catalyst for wider adoption of industrial timber construction, both domestically and in export markets.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":99204,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"Default","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5204],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-99203","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
