US lumber prices have strengthened in recent weeks, with futures reaching their highest level in almost ten months as supply concerns increasingly outweigh subdued buying activity across North America.<\/p>\n

Although day-to-day trading remains cautious, tighter production, uncertainty surrounding Canadian imports and relatively lean inventories have combined to support prices heading into the second half of the year.<\/p>\n

Lumber futures climbed above US$630 per thousand board feet in June, their highest level since October 2025, reflecting growing concerns that supply could tighten further later this summer.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Supply concerns outweigh slow buying<\/strong><\/p>\n

Unlike previous rallies driven by strong construction demand, the current market has been supported primarily by supply-side developments.<\/p>\n

Canadian softwood lumber imports are expected to become more expensive once additional Section 232 tariffs take effect in August. Even after adjustments to anti-dumping and countervailing duty rates, the combined tariff burden on Canadian shipments is expected to approach 36%, increasing costs for US buyers.<\/p>\n

The uncertainty surrounding the final trade measures has encouraged distributors to secure volumes before the new tariffs come into force, providing additional support for prices despite relatively slow end-user demand.<\/p>\n

At the same time, domestic US sawmills have shown little willingness to increase production aggressively, preferring to keep output aligned with current order files rather than rebuilding inventories.<\/p>\n

Buyers continue hand-to-mouth purchasing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite stronger futures, physical lumber trading has remained disciplined.<\/p>\n

Many wholesalers and retailers continue to purchase only for immediate requirements rather than rebuilding stock, a strategy that has characterised the North American lumber market for much of the past year.<\/p>\n

Producers have responded by maintaining relatively tight production schedules, preventing excess supply from accumulating and helping keep prices stable.<\/p>\n

Western Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF) lumber has shown the greatest resilience. Benchmark Western SPF KD 2x4 #2&Btr prices remained close to US$490 per thousand board feet through early June, around 7% higher than a year earlier.<\/p>\n

Order files at many western sawmills extended well into the second half of June, limiting buyers' ability to negotiate discounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Regional markets move in different directions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Market conditions varied across producing regions.<\/p>\n

Western Canadian producers generally favoured disciplined production and stable pricing, supported by improving lumber futures.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Southern Yellow Pine producers initially attempted to push through substantial price increases during the traditional spring buying season. However, with housing demand remaining weaker than expected, buyers largely rejected those increases, forcing mills to lower asking prices. More recently, higher transportation costs have allowed some producers to seek modest price increases once again.<\/p>\n

Eastern SPF markets also tightened, with relatively lean supply pipelines leaving some buyers exposed after delaying purchases in anticipation of lower prices.<\/p>\n

Housing remains the key demand driver<\/strong><\/p>\n

Residential construction continues to determine the overall direction of the lumber market.<\/p>\n

Although US homebuilding activity remains below the exceptionally strong levels seen during the pandemic housing boom, underlying demand for lumber has remained relatively stable.
