A group of Europe's leading timber manufacturers, construction companies, forest owners and research institutions has launched a new international alliance aimed at increasing the use of wood in construction by providing policymakers and investors with scientific evidence on timber's role in reducing carbon emissions.<\/p>\n

The Science and Timber Construction Alliance (SITCA)<\/strong> was officially introduced in Vienna under the coordination of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)<\/strong>. The founding partners include binderholz, EGGER, Stora Enso, WIEHAG, Hilti, Austrian Federal Forests (\u00d6Bf)<\/strong> and IIASA, while HASSLACHER Group<\/strong> has already joined as the alliance's first additional industry member.<\/p>\n

Unlike many industry initiatives that primarily focus on promotion or lobbying, SITCA intends to position itself as a scientific platform. Its objective is to generate research, consolidate existing evidence and provide decision-makers with technical information on sustainable forestry, carbon storage, timber availability and modern timber construction systems.<\/p>\n

The alliance comes at a time when governments across Europe are searching for ways to reduce emissions from the construction sector, one of the world's largest sources of greenhouse gases. While operational emissions from buildings have gradually declined through improvements in energy efficiency, the carbon footprint associated with construction materials has become an increasingly important policy issue. Timber producers believe this shift creates an opportunity for engineered wood products to replace more carbon-intensive materials in selected building applications.<\/p>\n

Construction moves to the centre of climate policy<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to IIASA Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber (in the left photo)<\/strong>, the construction sector represents one of the largest opportunities for long-term carbon reduction because buildings remain in service for decades.<\/p>\n

He argued that sustainably managed forests continuously remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through tree growth, while timber products can store that carbon for the lifetime of a building. When forests are regenerated and harvested responsibly, the process creates a continuous cycle of carbon capture and storage.<\/p>\n

SITCA refers to this concept as the \"Forestry-Construction Pump\"<\/strong>, describing the movement of carbon from the atmosphere into forests and ultimately into long-life buildings. The alliance argues that combining sustainable forest management, timber construction, reuse of wood products and improved recycling systems can extend carbon storage while maintaining renewable forest resources.<\/p>\n

Although the concept has been discussed within scientific circles for years, the alliance intends to provide updated research that can support future building regulations, climate policies and investment decisions.<\/p>\n

Industry seeks stronger scientific backing<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the alliance's main objectives is to bridge the gap between scientific research and commercial decision-making.<\/p>\n

Companies involved in timber construction have increasingly argued that the environmental performance of wood should be evaluated over the entire life cycle of buildings rather than only during manufacturing. SITCA plans to contribute scientific studies covering sustainable harvesting levels, forest productivity, carbon accounting, engineered wood technologies and circular use of timber products.<\/p>\n

The alliance also aims to improve the consistency of information available to governments, developers, architects, financial institutions and regulators as timber construction expands into larger commercial and multi-storey buildings.<\/p>\n

Rather than promoting individual products, the platform intends to create a shared scientific framework that participating organisations can reference when discussing forest management and timber construction policies.<\/p>\n

Large representation across the forest value chain<\/strong><\/p>\n

The founding members represent multiple stages of the forest-based economy, from forest ownership and research to engineered wood manufacturing and construction.<\/p>\n

binderholz<\/strong>, EGGER<\/strong>, Stora Enso<\/strong>, WIEHAG<\/strong> and HASSLACHER Group<\/strong> are among Europe's largest producers of structural timber, mass timber and engineered wood products used in residential, commercial and industrial construction. Hilti<\/strong> contributes expertise in construction technologies, while Austrian Federal Forests<\/strong> represents sustainable forest management.<\/p>\n

The alliance also includes international scientific organisations. The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO)<\/strong> will participate through its advisory board, contributing research on biodiversity, forest ecosystems and the social dimensions of forestry.<\/p>\n

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)<\/strong> is supporting the initiative through coordination with its Grow the Solution<\/strong> communication programme, which promotes the role of sustainably produced wood in climate-friendly construction worldwide.<\/p>\n

Beyond promotion<\/strong><\/p>\n

Austria has invested heavily in timber engineering research over the past decade and has become one of Europe's leading markets for engineered wood construction. Government support for research programmes, university chairs specialising in timber engineering and demonstration projects has contributed to wider adoption of wood in multi-storey buildings.<\/p>\n

Despite this progress, timber construction still represents a relatively small share of global construction activity. Regulatory differences, building codes, insurance requirements, public perception and concerns over timber availability continue to influence adoption rates in many countries.<\/p>\n

SITCA's founders argue that expanding timber construction will require more than technological innovation. They believe wider market acceptance depends on providing robust scientific evidence covering sustainable wood supply, biodiversity, carbon accounting and long-term building performance.<\/p>\n

Over the coming years, the alliance plans to publish research, facilitate cooperation between scientists and industry, and develop common recommendations aimed at supporting timber construction policies internationally.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
