Despite a more difficult economic backdrop shaped by conflict in the Middle East, trade tensions and persistent uncertainty, demand is expected to remain broadly stable over the next two years, according to the latest outlook from the Centre for Industrial Studies (CSIL).

The institute expects global economic growth to slow to 3.1% in real terms in 2026, largely reflecting the effects of the conflict involving Iran. Emerging economies are forecast to grow by 3.9%, while advanced economies are expected to expand by 1.8%. Conditions should improve only marginally in 2027, when global growth is projected at 3.2%, with emerging markets accelerating to 4.2% and advanced economies growing by 1.7%.

The ranking of the world's leading furniture exporters remains largely unchanged. China continues to dominate international trade by a considerable margin, while Vietnam and Poland hold second and third place. Italy retains fourth position, ahead of Germany, confirming its role as one of the industry's leading manufacturing hubs. The United States remains the largest furniture importer worldwide, followed by Germany, the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands.

According to CSIL, the biggest obstacle for manufacturers is no longer weak demand alone but the uncertainty surrounding international trade. Throughout 2025, companies had to contend with changing tariff policies, shifting geopolitical alliances and increasingly unpredictable trade relations among the world's major economies. That uncertainty complicated investment decisions and forced businesses to rethink sourcing strategies and supply chains.

The impact of the latest US tariffs, however, was less disruptive than initially feared. Many businesses and consumers accelerated purchases before higher duties took effect, temporarily supporting global economic activity during the first half of 2025. At the same time, part of international trade was rerouted through third countries, limiting the immediate effect on global supply chains.

Furniture trade followed the same pattern. Global trade in furniture was essentially flat in 2025, while the consequences of the tariffs introduced in October have only become visible this year. At the same time, geopolitical tensions and continued uncertainty over future trade policy have made both manufacturers and buyers more cautious.

The conflict in the Middle East has added another source of pressure. CSIL points to the International Monetary Fund's assessment that downside risks continue to outweigh upside potential for the global economy. Even if the conflict remains relatively short-lived, slower growth is expected. A prolonged war, deeper geopolitical fragmentation or further restrictions on international trade would weigh even more heavily on economic activity.

Beyond the direct geopolitical risks, disruptions to maritime shipping and damage to energy infrastructure have driven up energy and raw material costs. Higher input prices are feeding inflation, eroding consumer confidence and reducing both household spending and business investment.

Against this backdrop, furniture consumption across the 100 countries covered by CSIL is expected to remain broadly unchanged in real terms during 2026 after a difficult 2025. A modest recovery is forecast for 2027, although much will depend on how trade policy and geopolitical tensions evolve over the coming months.

The global furniture market is losing momentum, but not enough to derail growth.
